Did You Have A Birth Plan When You Were Pregnant?

I just gave birth to my son a few weeks ago, and went into the hospital with a birth plan in mind. Basically, I wanted to give birth without pain killers or an epidural (since that is how I had delivered my first two children). After laboring for 15 hours and pushing for 3 hours, I was begging for an epidural. Finally, they gave me an epidural and then ended up taking me to have a c-section done. This was due to the fact that they found out that my son was face up and too large to be pushed out. Not exactly the birth plan that I had in mind, but I wasn't as disappointed as I thought I would be. Did you have a birth plan and did it work out the way you wanted it to? If not, how did you feel afterwards?

I had a birth plan with my first daughter but I had to be induced as tshe was late so things were totally different to how I imagined them to be. However with my second daughter I knew what I wanted to do, but didn't plan it as I didn't want to be disapointed if things didn't turn out as planned. Fortuantely her birth was much more straight forward and things went really well.

Not really. I did know that I wanted pain medicine. I'm all for "natural" but I was really scared of giving birth, partially because of a previous injury to my private area. I wound up having to have a C-section too. I was a little disappointed, but it didn't really take me long to get over it. The important part was my lovely little boy, and that he was okay. =)

After having my first two naturally and then this one by c-section, I would definitely rather go natural. The recovery process is much quicker and less painful in the long run.

Same situation with me. The first thing I remember hearing when they pulled him out was, "OMG his head is HUGE!!".

I really didn't want to have a C-section either, but his big head got stuck on my pelvis. Not even born yet and he was already causing trouble. *laughs*

I didn't have a birth plan with my daughter. I had no meds and almost had her out naturally and she went into distress and they gave me an emergency csection. I'm still upset about the outcome because after she was born they go "OH.. oopps you really didn't need a csection." My next baby I will have a birth plan. I'm going to be trying for a VBAC and hopefully no meds.

I'm sorry to hear about the unnecessary c-section. It seems like more doctors these days are willing to cut us open to "save" themselves just in case something does go wrong. Good luck with the VBAC and no meds!!

My plan was to have a C Section due to a screw in my pelvis (there was no guarantee i would open enough to pass a baby & i didn't want her to get stuck or anything!) - everything went well, my daughter came out perfectly (even though they messed up the due dates & she was over cooked) & i think a C Section will be how i have my next one too!

I'm glad to hear that your daughter came out with no major complications. I think I'd be nervous about going through labor and delivery naturally if the docs couldn't guarantee a safe passage for the baby.

I had a birth plan when i gave birth to my son. Me and my husband planned it to be induced so that my son's birthday and mine will be the same. I had my epidural, which made half of my body numb so I was awake the whole time, just that I wasn't feeling my baby coming out. If feels so great to know that I was able to give life to a kid.

I agree, I think the feeling and the knowledge that you've given life to someone else is incredible.

With my son who is my first born I did not have a birth plan since he was my first and I was clueless. With my son after beng in labor and being induced to make the contractions stronger and not dialating past 6centimeters we decided to have a c-section. With the 3 girls I had planned c-sections. My oldest daughter was found breech 2weeks before my due date so my doctor scheduled a c-section for her, but when I went into surgery she had turned on me. My other 2 girls I had NO choice but to have c-sections because I had my first 2 by c-section. People ask me if I would change anything and honestly I wouldent. All that mattered to me was that each child have ten fingers, ten toes, two eyes, two ears, one nose, and one mouth and was healthy, everything else didnt matter.

addorible child - adorrible child
I didn´t have birth plans when I went to the hospital to give birth to both of my kids. What I remember was that I wanted to get over with as soon as possible but that´s normal. The first time you don´t know what to expect at all so you let it overcome. This was the hardest one and I was glad that they give me something for the pain. I was in labor for 48 hours and he still couldn´t come out. The only thing I didn´t want was that the had to cut in me or that they needed a sizzer. The second one was a easy one 5 hours from the beginning till the end. Without any painkillers or help from the doctor. I think you can´t plan a birth becaurse every delivery is different.

That's true, every labor and birth will be different. I think it's nice to have a plan, but that you should be open to changes in the plan if necessary.

uhmmm... birth plan.. im not yet pregnant and its not gonna happen for as long im still studying.. though im kinda thinking about that.. i might as well plan it.. i wanted to have a painless delivery since im heck a lot of scared of being operated and i kinda have a low threshold in bearing pain.. but i also want to experience the real pain and pleasure of delivering a wonderful baby into the world.. so i guess i would want to have a normal delivery as much as i can in my future babies.. and hopefull i can take it..

that's a lot of hours to go through with the pain. Thankfully both times with my kids it never happened that way. I just had to suffer for eight hopurs or so. Only plan I had in my mind last time as to get out of the hospital the very next day, if everything went well. First time I was kept for observation for three days and developed cysts and swelling in my legs as I was not taken care of by the hospital staff, so this time I just had decided not to rely on them and come bakc pretty soon. Thankfully this worked and I was back in my home next morning.

I just planned to get to the hospital. My first was only a 4 hour labour(yes, I know you hate me and will hate me even more) and I nearly had her at home. My second was 1 hour and 40 minutes from first apin to baby cry (see, I told you!) My third was quitea bit longer andthe nurses were laughing at me at 8 hours when I said something ws wrong because itshouldn't take that long. 20 minutes later, she was born with the cord wrapped tightly around her throat twice. I had all three with no pain meds.

Wow, three quick labors!! My first labor was 11 1/2 hours from the first contraction till baby was born. My second labor was 3 1/2 hours from the first contraction till baby was born. I thought the third was going to be a piece of cake, but I was wrong!! *LoL*

hey thankfully, i'm glad, everything went right even though you nothing happened according to your birth pln. i'm a married woman but still not a mother. but i have a birth plan. i want to have my first baby take birth without doctors giving me a painkiller. only if their arises some complications, i'll go for c-section. i don't know why, but just thinking of me going through labor gives me goose bums.

I don't think I really had a plan but I was in labor a long time and was sick and got dehydrated so gave me pain medicine and by the time I gave birth they could not keep him breathing because he got so much of medicine they gave me. It turned out okay in the end but what a scary deal that was. When my second one was being delivered he was so much more careful nt to give so much medicine. Things sure can change fast that is for sure

I had a birth plan but exactly like the ones I saw on the internet. I already told my OB that I want an epidural although she recommended not to. I also planned to tolerate the pain of contractions until I can before I request for the epidural. I never knew how painful the contractions are until I experienced then yet I planned only to have 3 injections of epidural. I also made myself promise that it will not take me hours to push my baby out of my tummy, 30 minutes is my maximum time. The two things that didn't happen in my own birth plan is the number of epidural injections, I planned for 3 but I only got 2 because I only requested ofr it around when I'm 6cm dilated. And the second is my time interval in giving birth, I gave myself 30 minutes but I delivered by baby is 2 pushes and in less than 5 minutes. It took me more time to wait in the recovery room than in the delivery room.

I kind of had a birth plan when I was pg. I knew that I wanted an epidural for the last 2, and that I really wanted to avoid being induced if at all possible, which by the time I was 2 weeks overdue, I no longer cared if I was induced, I just wanted to not be pregnant anymore!! I never decide before the birth what I will or won't have absolutely because I know that every birth is different. I know that if at all possible I want to avoid a c-section, and with having mid-wives, they will do their best to work with me on that, other than that, I'm very go with the flow on the birthing process. You have to be as it isn't written in stone how it's going to go. There is no acurate predicting for even the date you will deliver, let alone how the delivery will go.

yeah, i went to the hospital with a birthplan. i wasnt sure if it was going to be followed, but i really hoped it would be. i have heard so many times that the nurses dont even to bother to look at it. thank goodness i had wonderful nurses that did look at it and went by it without me even having to ask. i had requested no needles in me, and especially no epidural. i even put that i would like to labor in the water instead of in a room. after i was registered in, they had me walk for about an hour, and once they were able to determine that it was real labor, they asked me if i would like to get in the water. so thats what i did, i labored in the water for the next 6 hours. we are not allowed to give birth in the water, so then i had to go into a room and have him there. i had left the episiotomy cut decision up to the dr. i figure, he knows more about whats going on down there, than i do. well, i was able to have him all natural just like i wanted. i even had nurses come into my room the next day to see me since they said its so rare for anyone to actually go thru with doing it all natural :) it was a great experience. i have the exact same birth plan written out for this baby, and hopefully all goes fast and smooth this time around also.

This is my first son and I usally can hold in the pain but this was different. At the end of the day i was glad to be through the pain holding my son.
