if you were given a choice, a brilliant doctor with poor bedside manners like house or a compassionate one with modest skills, who would you choose? i'm actually uncomfortable with doctors who are too touchy-feely. i was wondering if anyone else feels that way.

Ahhh! This came up in my household recently. i was having some medical issues and even though I had test after test and saw my doctors repeatedly, they couldn't find anything. I said that if Dr. House were on my case, the mystery would be solved!

Modest skills is not something I want to be dealing with when it comes to a doctor. Being kind and caring is great, but the person's skills as a healer is the whole reason we have doctors. While, a poor bedside manner might not be the most fun thing to deal with when you are sick, I would put skill above compassion. I would like a brilliant doctor, but also one who takes the time to explain things. House might be a bit gruff, but he usually at least tells patients what's wrong with them...even if it is a totally gruff way. For me the most important thing is being informed and getting better.

I like dr's like house straight and to the point. It makes things easier to deal with and I hate when dr's assume they know how I feel when they tell me something. Not everybody is the same. If I need somebody to talk to or lean on it wouldn't be a dr I don't know. I see nothing wrong with being honest and upfront and letting people deal with it there own way. I know that some people like that I just don't

I want a doctor like House, straightforward.. no beating around the bush. If your dying...you really are dying! Sometimes, doctors who tries to soften things up makes matters worst...like giving false hopes to patient and their families. They don't know that they are simply prolonging the agony of the sick person.

I totally agree with you about the touchy-feely doctor thing. I think the doctor should be compassionate, but their first and foremost responsibility is to heal me. Also, when a doctor is too touchy-feely it bothers me because they don't really know me and it makes me feel kinda awkward. I would love to have a doctor like House only because he is such a good doctor. If I never see him, I would get over it as long as his team took care of me and I got better. Brilliant is always better than modest skills in my book.

Oh, I'd certainly prefer a doctor who can heal me over one who will cry with me. I'm looking for a doctor, not a pastor, after all, or an after school special, for that matter. I can take the sarcasm and the lack of personality if that's what it takes to get good medical care. Of course, unfortunately, it looks like I'll have to wait a couple years until I'm fully employed to get good medical insurance, so it'll be awhile before I can made that choice at all, sadly.

That is not an easy question to find an answer to. I have never seen an ordinary doctor that would be very compassionate, they probably have to keep some distance to be able to continue their job. If I meet a very efficient, brilliant doctor with poor manners, I hope there is one or two nurses around to soften the situation a little. We need compassion too, to be able to heal, as it is important that our mind is positive and helps the body to heal.

yes, i don't care for a strange doctor who touches or feels.. but I am not a pinoy but my wife is and we have a Philippine doctor who is good with a good personality...that is what makes the diffence.. My asawa and I have been married 22 years and we have had many docotrs ..both American, Thailand, and of course Filipino.. We are both trained in nursing but we are retired and have a home in the US and one in the Philippines..but I pay $55.00 dollars an office visit in the US but only $5.00 in the Philippines..lol...medecine is also very expensive in the US but my health insurance pays for most of this...but not the office visit..that I pay. I have a female dentist that is good...but she is young and so is her dental hygeniest..so they treat me very well but don't get personal either... thanks for the good post..
