Hi this was a quote that my friend told me the other day--what do you think? & do you know who said it (orginally) PEOPLE ARE HELL Is the quote.

I think the quote you are referring to is from Jean Paul Sartre's play "No Exit" and the full line would be: "You don't need red hot pokers. Hell is other people." Taken in this context, of course, the meaning is clear: The most hellish torturers of people are other people. We create the standards and judgements with which we torture ourselves and our neighbors. It is the criticism of other people by which we judge our worth - and are most often found wanting. It's really a popular quote which is why it is so paraphrased - people are hell, hell is people, etc.. While I am not familiar with Sartre's philosophy, I remember that he was an existentialist and a Marxist. He was into metaphysics and that's about all that I know. I only remember the quote from a play/reading in a drama course. I hope this is what you were looking for.
