Addiction to Pain

There is pain and pleasure, and I dare say that most of us suffer more pain than experience pleasure. Modern biochemistry is teaching us now that all our emotions set off a certain substance proper to each of the sentiment, which is absorbed by our cells, and they get used to it. They do, in fact, want more of the same, like a good junky. Meaning that if I suffer long enough from depression, I will find ways (through my visualizations, memories, projections, etc.) to stay depressed. This is obviously a subconscious process, but it is based on a physical addiction. Is this just hogwash, or is there something to it?

I am sorry but, had you ever been depressed you would not ask this question. I think this is stupid I have schizoid affective disorder which includes several long and deep episodes of psychosis and depression. I hate being this way and am only now recovering with the proper medication and attitude. I have built an attitude where I fight this illness and am training to be a counsellor. In my experience nobody wants to be ill.

Look, Mickie30, I´m sorry if I hurt your feelings. Maybe I should have made clear that my post doesn't refer to people with a clinical disorder. Wish you all the best.

I have to agree to an extent. And offer that people should take a closer look at why the continue the same destructive behaviors. Whether it be physical or phscological ( I lean towards the latter ) they derive something that on some level they is positive for them.

Freddy Mercury already sang 'Pain is so close to pleasure'. Must be something to it.
