Trying to get first reptile as pet.

I've recently been looking into getting my first reptilian pet. Thing is, of course, my mother is vehemently against getting any more pets, and she's definitely not that fond of reptiles. Any tips getting her to cave? I'm really intent on getting a snake (probably a corn snake, I've read that they're good for beginners), but I'm open to other reptiles as well (maybe something with legs would be more manageable for my mother =P). Also, I've heard that snakes have very long lifespans for pets. And I imagine it'd be fairly difficult to rehome a snake if you lost the ability to keep it. I'm trying to plan for the future, like college in two years, and I want to make sure I'm not going to be adopting a pet that I'll end up having to leave behind in a couple of years if I end up living on a campus that doesn't allow pets, or an apartment that doesn't. Any ideas on that? Helps me, I want a reptile.

Have you thought about getting a gecko? The Geico commercials are so popular, and that lizard is looked upon as a cute mascot, maybe she'd make the association and not be against it. It seems less threatening to get a gecko when you see an animated one on TV being "cute." And about the snake - I think you would have to get a very understanding roommate to be able to take it to college with you. Although, you never know!

Yeah, I've had it recommended to me to get a gecko if I end up being able to get a reptile. =]

Corn snakes can make great pets but if you're this close to going away to college what will happen to it if you can't take it with you? What if you just don't have enough time to devote to it with all your studying? I'd say hold off for awhile and enjoy the college experience without the added responsibility.
