What do school bus drivers do during the time they are not driving the kids?

I have always been curious what school bus drivers do during the time between when they are not taking the kids to school and when they are taking them home. Are there any school bus drivers here? At times, I have thought about doing school bus driving. Do you have an office to go to and do other work while you are waiting til it is time to take the kids home? Sometimes I see school buses parked in front of peoples homes and wonder if they go home in between or if they do other type of work for the schools?

I used to be a bus aide and the bus drivers did the same thing us aides did when not driving, either went out for lunch or went home and did chores. That was the only advantage though. It was nice to be able to go home but it certainly didn't help the paycheck any

Every town is different. That's just the way it worked with that bus company . There may be other places that had bus drivers do something else but with the one I worked for ,they got done with the bus run and they were done til it was time to pick up and lot of us aides and drivers used that time to do other things.

Normally school bus drivers do not just drive one batch of kids. They usually take a few batches... otherwise they simply can't make enough to put food on the table. And they won't just drive students. Usually they help with workers for factories too.

i am sorry to say this but the school bus drivers do not have the right to bring factory workers to and from home. the insurance on those bus are diffrent than the ones that actually do bring those type of people. yes it is the same type of license but not the same insurance on the buses.

A school bus driver can not transport any people for hire...can not accept money for transport either. That is covered under a different license and the bus has to carry special plates for this type of work.

My MIL drove a bus for about two years. She had 3 schools she drove for. She would come home in the middle of the day for a few hours to get house work done, relax, eat lunch or read. even with driving for 3 schools, I don't think she worked more than 25 hours a week.

I have an aunt and 2 uncles who are bus drivers. They work at other jobs for the School system when they are off duty in the day time. Their day begins when they pick up the children and ends when they have parked the bus in the evening. I dont know if all school systems are like this or not.We do have a school bus drived on mylot so I will direct her to this article for you.

This is very funny lolzzzzzz i think nobody here in mylot is a bus driver as profession. Anyway bus drivers too have their families so, they do their other family business when they are not driving. But i think it will be a cool idea for bus drivers to use mylot when they are not driving in that way learning and both earning. Anyway you really can create discussions, might be you have a good sense of humor too.

My bestfriend is a schoolbus driver and she comes home and gets house work done. She will also run errands when necessary and ever since she got her computer I had her sign up to mylot and she now "works" mylot in her spare time to earn some extra pocket change. For every bus driver it is diffrent. For every town it is diffrent. It all depends on who you ask.

I have friends that are drivers. They all do something different. Some go home and wait for the afternoon run. Some have other part time jobs they go to until the afternoon pick-up. Some run routes for other schools. It varies depending on the individual. one of my friends does the school bus in the morning, a paper route mid day and then back to picking up the kids in the afternoon. She works every day for over 8 hours a day.

School bus driver has always been a coveted job by many farmers in our area. They are already up to do chores, then drive the bus, go back to the farm, or do a charter run. Then they drive the bus in the afternoon, do chores, eat. etc etc. It is really great extra income for some local farmers. Some drivers in the area drove me to school and my kids as well!!!!! Once you have that job you do not give it up easily I guess.

The guy that lives down the road drives a school bus. We live in a really small town so we don't have any type of public transportation where he would be able to do that type of job. Anyhow, he's semi-retired and just does it because he loves the kids so much. In fact he drove the school bus my hubby took to school as a kid. This guy does his route in the moning and then comes home until it's time for school to end and then does it again.

I think it all depends on the bus driver, I've seen school buses parked and the drivers just clean them out and then go to sleep for a while until they have to pick the kids up. I have also know drivers that drove special kids in the morning to elementary school and then also use the normal bus to pick up kids that needed to go to high school since the times were different. Normally they drop off the buses at the bus depot area however a lot of times that's out of their way so they'll bring their car to a separate area so they and then carpool with several other bus drivers to their homes and do house work and stuff during the day while waiting for the kids to get out.

nice doubt! i too have the same doubt but now i know what they do(only about some) some of them will be playing cards with their cleaners and persons inside the school they have no other jobs...and the next will go for other trips(for school and personal) and came back to the scool before the last bell... they are earning more, but they can do it only if the school permits !!!and some others were sleeping inside the bus they r working in the night as taxi drivers... else i don't know what they do.!!!

The drivers sometimes do other charters, like driving a bunch of people to a field trip or something.

In Sri Lanka Schools start at 8 am and end at 2.30 pm. School transport service is not state controlled and is done by the owner of the vehicle itself. So they use the gap between the trips to do other businesses. Some go to the share market to do a day trade.

i think some drivers usually have somethings to do in the school they worked with depending on the contract entered by him..if it means just driving ..then some maybe have another jobs in between or it could be theyre in the house sleeping..who knows then..

i am a school bus driver and have been for 4 years now. if you really want to be a bus driver then thier a questions that you need to ask yourself and you need to give the most honest answer to your self and to the employer the you are aplying to. it takes a lot to become a driver. you need to have the patients with the kids and especially with handicap kids. you need to be able to do more than one task at a time. every child has diffrent needs and you need to know how to handle each one diffrently. as for what i do in between the runs depends on the yard that you work for and what work they have for the day . thier are times that i need to bring buses to our garage to get fixed and thier are saftey meetings that you have to attend and thier are kindergarden runs that have to be done and thier are what they call charters that have to be done for the day. thier are a lot of things that need to be done when you are a bus driver. some times you get to go home and sometimes you do not get to go home. sometimes you get to clean your house and rest up somewhat before you have to go back to work in the afternoon. sometimes you get to do some earns that you need to get done with out the kids around. sometimes you just want to come home and go to sleep because you are so with drawn and very tiered. i love to be a bus driver and i would not give up this type of work for anything. i love being with the kids that i have and i love to have the same time off as my children do. this type of job you really need to sit back and think things through and give it a really long thaught. if you do then the more power to you and good luck.

My dad drives a school bus. He use to do both high school and public school, but got switched to only do public school and take the kids going from there to TR Leger...He does a TON of stuff between runs. He works on a fark(friend he has through the bus company) and cuts down trees in certain area that are either clearing out for development, or some of the quarries. He then sells the split wood for fire wood. He also does a lot of fixing jobs on equipment for the buses and farms and around our house. Only the heads of the bus companies sit in offices. Bus drivers go home and do watever they want with the rest of their lives between runs.

My sons bus driver goes shopping between the bus runs. She has also gone out to lunch with me. I think that it depends onwhich school district you work for as well as which bus you drive. Our school has a preschool bus which makes 4 trips a day that takes about 30 minutes each . Then they also have 3 other buses for the other children that run 4 times a day for an hour each. They drivers can make extra money doing field trips.
