Pets names

What have you called your pets and why? I have 3 chinchillas. The first one is called Henry. I called him this as it was my Grandad's nickname and it would help towards my parents accepting him as they are not over keen on pets. The second one is called Joe - I dont really have a reason for this name. The 3rd one is called Dini, this is short for Houdini and he is so called because when he was a baby he always escaped from the cage whenever I tried to put him to bed. What pets do you have, what are their names and why?

My first dog ever was bought for me back in the 70s and his name was Teeny Bopper Jim, we called him Teeny. He was a toy fox terrier. The whole family helped with the name. I kept saying I wanted to have a teeeeeeny tiny dog and everyone laughed at the way I said it, so Teeny stuck. My sisters added Bopper for 'teeny bopper' and my dad's name is Jim. Teeny Bopper Jim. My next dog is Holly. A fiesty little terrier mix. My husband and I found her at a no kill shelter. I had a list of names that I liked for dogs and thought I would just choose among them based on the dog. Holly was found wondering the streets so they did not know her name. They gave her a temporary name I think because it seems easier to relate to a dog with a name. We could have changed the name. But everyone at the shelter loved her and called her Holly as we brought her out to play. By the time we played for an hour or so and kept hearing her called that it just seemed to fit. She was a Christmas present for me and we decided that Holly was a nice holiday name. Two years later we wanted another dog. Holly needed a playmate. I did not have any names in my mind this time. I would let circumstances predict the name as last time. It was our intension to get a small dog, definitely smaller than Holly so that she would always feeling like the alpha dog so to speak. Well, Mocha chose me!!!!! She was about 10 pounds bigger than Holly and not at all what I had in mind. But she was the sweetest dog I had ever experienced in my life. She came out of the crate and into my arms as if to say, I have been waiting for you to get here. She already had a name that she was being called as well. Would you believe, it was Molly? That would never work!!!! She is black, a sheltie mix and has this beautiful ring of color around her neck and on her paws just exactly the color of cocoa. My favorite coffee house/Starbucks drink at the time was a Mocha latte. Mocha it was! My husband didn't like it at the time but it grew on him quickly and she is such a little Mocha now. She is still the sweetest dog I have ever experienced. Holly is my first child and very much the dearest thing to my heart, but their is something oh so special about Mocha.

Your dogs sound absolutely lovely and Mocha is such a sweet name. I agree you should see the animal first before deciding upon a name.

I now believe you should never name a dog ahead of time like you name children. Where children grow into their names kind of become their names, dogs have a personality the first time they wiggle their litte tails. I think you should try to match the name to the dog where ever possible.

Isn't it funny how we give our pets nicknames to go with their regular names? :) I've had many, my angel dog named Missy, hers was Moochie Girl (self explanatory), Buckwheat the cat was Buckie Buddy, Old Yellow the cat, he is Old Buddy, Yellow kitty & Old Yeller & his heaviness (looks like Garfield), I had one years ago named Tillie, after Atilla the Hunn (sp), I love your discussion :)
