Fleas Everywhere

I have had my two cats for a few months now. It turns out that the home i recently purchased is infested with fleas, and now so are my cats! They are in the carpet, on my furniture, and if I sit still long enough, I will see one crawling on my arms. I have treated the cats, but they are still in the carpet and end up back on the cats anyway. My kitten seems to be allergic. She has scabs all over and keeps scratching them open. Then I have to catch her and try to get her to stop bleeding. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have tried flea powders that you put on the carpet and then vacuum up. I have tried dipping the cats, but to no avail. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you are going to have to bite the bullet and call a professional exterminator. Sounds as if you've all ready tried the do it yourself methods. I wonder if they make a frontline product for cats like they do for dogs. We use this product on our dog and it has worked very well. He has never had fleas. At any rate if the product will work on cats, it would protect your cats until you can rid the home of fleas.

I should add that I would call the vet asap to see about the frontline.....maybe the dog version would be safe to use on a cat?

Go to your local hardware and speak to them they should be able to offer you some products, we have a product called "coopex" you mix it with water in a garden sprayer and spray the whole yard and around the outside of the house. "Mallawash" can be spayed on the inside of the house and furnishings or you could use Baygon or Raid sprays or flea bombs these all kill fleas and other nasties, then heaps of vacuming. Frontline works well for animals and you only have to put it on the back of their necks so it's easy to use. You will probably have to do it about 3-4 times 2 months apart to realy get rid of them. Best of luck

Get them to the vet. At least take the kitten and get something for them to repel the fleas. On your way home get some extra vacuum bags. Then vacuum your floors. Run the vacuum over every surface including under all furniture and do the furniture also. Do this 3 times a day. Throw the bag away or better yet, burn it. Do not let them get out and back in the house. After the first 3 days or so you will see a BIG improvement. You can also vacuum less often. I have done this, and it is HARD work, but it is the only way I have found that Really works. I have heard that sprinkling borax as well as salt on the rug between vacuums helps a lot, so you might try that. Do not forget to do your yard with a good commercial product if the cats go in and out. You will also carry a few in on you, so keep the grass cut on a timely schedule will also help. Here is a link to a page a friend of mine has that is full of tips to get rid of fleas, maybe there is something there you could try also. http://www.byfaithonly.com/fleas.html
