One thing good about piracy is that it's very efficient. I gotta admit that. As soon as, or even before some artist releases a new album, say in the States, people in China can obtain a copy of that album that sounds just the same (to us ordinary fans of course) and maybe is only quarter the price of the genuine copy. As for the genuine copies, they usually hit the market months after the release. You do the math; Which would you choose?
So, genuine copies have to be a lot more efficient to rival its pirated counterpart in that field. And also, price wise, if there's a way to lower the costs, I think the genuine copies can undercut the pirated too. Depending on their price elasticity, lowering prices might just boost their sales which might generate more profits by the way.

sometimes i do patronize piracy. its more practical than purchasing the legit ones. sometimes i really feel that selling cds and dvds here in the philippines at around P400 or P800 is really too much, its overpricing, so i'd go for those discs that cost around P100 or i download most files from the internet

I don't want to be a hypocrite. I live in a third world country where a simple 400 php worth of CD is already a luxury. I must admit i enjoy paying 40php only for a pirated DVD. It's actually like a robinhood principle, robbing the rich and giving it out for the poor.
buying genuine dvds' and cds's will only make all those overpaid movie producers richer..

The only thing I can think of to stop piracy is for the consumer not to buy them. Next thing is for the government confiscate the machines use for illegal copying, find the culprits, arrest them and jail them, burn all the pirated CDs. It is now being done here in the Philippines

thats a good idea, we should jail the people who manufactures it not the seller! just like a tree we need to get the rrot to be able to stop it from growing. and people should stop buying it also. but i know pirated is cheaper than the originals probably thats the reason also why people are buying it. maybe they should lower the price so that everyone can buy it. Nice post!!!

as long as there are buyers, i doubt that piracy would ever stop. pirates can easily find ways to sell their cds/dvds anyway.

if the government will implement the full force of the law and have it done without remorse, there might be a chance that piracy will go down, if not stopped.
Buyers are consumers and the pirates continue to blackmail the government for will be jobless people if piracy is stopped. The government has to have teeth and balls to pursue its anti piracy policy.
