As a Mom, I'm concerned...

My daughter is 7 years old and she has autism...that's not the issue for the topic though. She is in an exceptional children's class in her school. I will say she is the most behind in her class but that's what she is there for to be taught. Well everyday the teacher or one of the assistants writes in a journal so we can communicate back and forth. Today it said that my daughter took a nap in the a.m., had to be woken up for lunch, and then after lunch went back to sleep. Now I know she's usually doing everything separate from her other classmates because they are very much ahead of her but she should also be taught throughout the day. I find it very discouraging that they let my daughter sleep the entire day. I don't believe public schools are for babysitting and this is what it sounds like to me. I have written note back to see why i wasn't called and if this is normal for her to be secluded and be allowed to sleep the entire day. I already know what I need to do, so I'm just ranting on here about it. But who's with me? School is for learning not nap time....at least not 6 or 7 hours of naptime.

If she slept all day at age 7, are you sure she isn't coming down with an illness? That would be my first concern. However, if she is doing this regularly, perhaps she is not sleeping at night any more. You might consider finding another school for her where she will get some 1 on 1 sessions with a qualified teacher.
