Cat fur trade

March 28, 2007 3:11am CST
I have just come across this issue. Particularly the issue of fur farming in China which has not been sufficiently publicised. But this article shows that the practice of using fur from cats and dogs is much more widespread than I had believed. Please read and comment. http://www.messybeast.com/cat-fur.htm

Very barbaric and the most bizzar thing i have seen. How can a man do a thing like this? what would he have done if in the place of the animal it was his child. My father once told me not to hurt an animal because they cannot speak of their pain like you do to your mom, but i feel that those men are also thinking like this only difference lies in , hurt them they wont complain...Poor fellows.

I really is beyond my comprehension how anyone can do this work day in and day out as they must do, and not be brutalised by it.

I have heard of this. About 15 years ago a friend of mine went to China and saw all these cats squished in cages on the train station, her and her friend let them out, which started a riot at the station, they never got caught luckily I think because they may have be charged for it? I wont look at the link because animal cruelty disturbes me and I don't want any nightmares.

Unfortunately it the people who look the other way and pretend that it's not happening who are allowing it to continue to happen. I'm not saying this in order to make you personally feel guilty about trying to ignore the issue, because I understand entirely you're point of view. I disturbs me as well. As I have said in previous comments, I've only just become aware of this myself. It's not just China that is involved in doing this, the article mentions several instances of cats vanishing in the UK and of skinned carcasses being found dumped - again in the UK. These are peoples pets that are being stolen and of course, the fur trade denies all knowledge of it.

The link given by the previous poster is worth looking at. Though if you wand to get a sound night's sleep, you might not want to watch the video..It is quite horrific.

It's not just cats, watch the video at http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/Prefs.asp?video=fur_farm To help end this barbaric handling, and to change the laws on Chinese garment labeling, go to care2connect where you can sign petitions against this outrage!

I have seen this site. The descriptions of the way in which animals are dealt with on these Chinese fur farms is truly horrifying. More often than not, the animals are still alive while being skinned and can take up to 10 minutes to die after there skin has been completely removed. The people who run these places cannot have a single scrap of human decency or compassion in them!

I know it doesn't help much but at least most of the world does not allow these things to be imported...It's illegal to import items made with cat or dog fur into the US, the EU, Australia, Canada and a bunch of other countries. Still, it is just sick to think about.

Please read the article properly. Australia is actually an exporter of cat pelts! Part of the problem is that the true origin of fur is hidden by being deliberately described as coming from other animals such as rabbit.

I'm sorry I missed this discussion jwfarrimond...I don't think we were friends back then so the reason why otherwise you bet I would have responded to it...well better late than never I guess I had been aware about the cat/dog fur "industry" for sometime, but to be honest wasn't until recently aware of the extent of it. I read part of the article in that link...and how certain "color" cats are more vulnerable...like black cats....since their fur would most closely resemble mink --makes you wonder if mink coats really are mink then, doesn't it? Did you know many cat toys made of fur are made with cat fur? Isn't that really sick?
