How many times have you quit?

Seventh time is the charm for me, although I've had a few cigarettes towards the end this last time. I've tried so hard--the first time I quit cold turkey, but it was with my soon-to-be husband (although I wasn't really thrilled) and that stuck for over 5 years. I've tried hypnosis a number of times, cold turkey and finally a new drug Chantix. I stopped taking it because I wasn't having cravings (and I wanted to drink alcohol again). I don't really have cravings, I was just annoyed at my boyfriend that weekend and had a couple of smokes (which I didn't buy any at all). But I think that it'll stick this time--I'm to cheap to start again, LOL! What's worked for you (or are you still smoking)?

Oh no.. I didn't realize there was already a discussion about this. I just posted my own lol.
I have quit about 3 times now, and no success. Well, almost 3 years was the highest.
Good for you that you haven't gone back. Money too is a good reason to stop. I am still smoking. Since last July I started again. I would have been quit 3 years this past February. I could kick myself in the head!
You know when I good time to quit is? When your sick. That's how I did it the last time. But I was really ill for a long time so it made it sooo easy. Not that I want to have to get that sick again just to quit lol.
Hopefully I can find something that will help me. I have done it cold turkey before as well.

(I just posted to your topic). I've tried so many times but I keep relying on crutches to help me quit (hypnosis, Chantix)--I should try cold turkey again. I think that we need a support person who will help us be strong! I received counseling last time and some tips they gave me: when a craving hits drink water, chew gum, anything to get your mind off it (and it'll go away in about 4-5 minutes); find your triggers and avoid them (mine is driving, but it's hard to survive in the suburbs without a car!); find alternatives (gum chewing, hard candy, twizzlers) to smoking--it's all about the habit of lifting something to our mouths. Good luck!

Hi, well done on quitting for so long. I'm still smoking I'm afraid, but I did give up smoking when I was pregnant and stuck to it all the way through so I'm proud of that. I don't feel the need to stop at the moment and feel I should lose weight more importantly first!

I've gone back already (unfortunately)--this time lasted about 2 months :( I've just had a really difficult time lately and have felt the need more and more lately...I'm mad at myself, but now that I know my triggers, I can start avoiding them again. Although I have to admit, I WAS about 10 pounds lighter before I quit!

I did smoke for a short while .. but only to try and ingratiate myself with the other staff members .. and I don't think I ever learned how to actually inhale the smoke properly .. just suck it up and puff it straight back out hahaha
I never became addicted (just as I never get addicted to anything) .. so when the price of a packet went up to £2 that was it .. never bought any more .. never missed them and was just thankful not to have to carry around the flippin' stinky things anymore ..

Good luck--I wasn't successful until I truly WANTED to quit and it had to be for me! It is a struggle and only those that have been there and done it understand just how much of a struggle it is. I wish you well!

Oh my god I could go on forever!!! I have just recently quit (for the 10th or so time) and I tel you what. It is getting harder and harder for me. the cravings keep coming back stronger. I have tried nicotine patches, hypnosis, nicotine gum, cold turkey, working out excessively. This quitting period I can't stay away from chocolate!!!
I recon quitting with someone is the best answer! If you have someone close to you you can do it with you will have a higher percentage of sticking to it! Being said that, if my boyfriend slips up...so do I! Good luck with it Hun!

Sadly, I've started again (argh!), although today I've made a conscious effort to cut back (from about 20 a day to less than 10). I have just had a real hard time recently and my boyfriend hasn't said anything, but I believe he'll figure it out sooner or later. I'll have to find a buddy to quit with! Good luck quitting--I'm sending you hugs!
