Are you indirectly sustaining the Pirated softwares & cds market?

I just bought a few movies (dvds) from a recognised store. It turns out that even though the wrapping/packaging looks authentic, the actual cd is just a very good copy of the original movie. How can we actually get the original for the price that we paid for them? How can we find out? The same can also be said for some games and softwares that is available. This is frustrating! Has anyone been duped into buying these 'original' copies?
