I just finished watching Eragon and loved it. How did you like the movie? Do you think it was a good book adaptation? You can check out my complete review of the movie at: http://www.epinions.com/content_340066012804 Cheers! Ram

Oh, Lord, no. If you counted all of the good dragon-based fantasy movies on your fingers, you would still have enough fingers left to flip off the Eragon film as you left the theater laughing. The CGI dragon is very good, and does better acting than any of the actual humans in the film. During the dark, evil reign of Malkovich, a new hero shall arise. But there shall be no rejoicing, for this new hero is but a nancy boy. Eragon chooses to be a god-awful adaptation, even with such talent as Malkovich and Irons behind it. The script is terrible, and they totally butchered the book, it's new deformed incarnation much more ugly and stupid than the book. The dialogue and action could have been written better by ten year olds. It's certainly one of the worst films of the year. The single good part of this movie was, "one part brave, three parts fool." Well, it appears that the filmmakers only subscribed to the "three parts fool" side of the equation if they signed on for this pile of utter pap.

Hmm... you do seem to have strong views about the book. Can you tell me a few things that you felt were missing in movie from the book. Don't go about saying that you have not read the book because I have and I thought the adaptation was a clever one which took out the boring portions of the book. One part which I will agree with you was the climax which could have been done much better. Cheers! Ram

Hmm.. you have some valid points, and I agree with you on Solembum. But, the last point you made gets it absolutely correct, it would have been a too long a movie. I don't agree with your latter part of that line that the movie should not have been made in that case. I feel we should go ahead and make the movie if we can get reasonably close to the book and that has been tried in Eragon. Cheers! Ram

Okay, here we go: The learning of the Ancient Language. There was no way that Eragon was proficient enough in the ancient language to kill those Ra'Zac so easily. Angela: They totally screwed he over! "doo let de Angela tell yeh fohrtoone." Nothing like Angela, and they completely cut out Solembum, one of the best charactersin the book. The story: There was little story, if any. One of my favorite parts about Eragon was how in-depth the conversations with Brom got- the Ancient Language, the history of Alagaesia, dragons, etc. Now it's all gone. But my favorite part of Eragon was the sweeping political story in Farthen Dur, and that's gone too. The acting: The acting was just bad, and pure, 100% Hollywood cheese. The actors seem to have a habit of sticking periods midway through a sentence. "Take care of. Saphira. Because without her. Life is hardly. worth living." Murtagh: They made Murtagh look like an emo punk. They did him all wrong, and made him look like the was a paranoid schizophrenic with a drinking problem. They got his captivity wrong. The story and geography: They cut out 7/8ths of the attention to detail that made Eragon great in the first place. I know that there is a flaw in all my reasoning, and I acknowledge it: If they had made the movie close enough to the book to satisfy me, the movie would be far too long. I say, in that case, better if the movie had never been made. The end.

I agree with Doomslayer. The movie itself was OK. I wish they could have spent more time developing the story, instead of jumping from action to action. The dragons in the movie were beautifully done--I just wish their colors could have been brighter. That's just a personal preference. Now, if I'm comparing it to the book... By killing the Ra'zaac, they killed their chance of a sequel. Who is going to go after Roran? Where was Roran in the movie anyway? Katrina? The city of Tierm? The desert? Snowfire? Even the little details were left out. Things that a skilled costumer should have been able to do. Where were the horns on the Urgals? The beaks on the Ra'zaac? There was no such thing as a DWARF in the movie, either. They become such an important factor in the 2nd book. Another feature that is going to be difficult to deal with if they make a sequel. I know that movies can only adapt so much from books. It just seemed to me that these writers read the cliff notes and tried to adapt it from there. So sad, really, because it could have been a great movie if the details had been paid attention to.

Hmm... I agree with your points on the Dwarves and the description of the characters. I think most of the concentration was on Saphira and getting her correct, but even I was disappointed with the back ground voice of Saphira. I just thought it lacked the conviction for the role. But, I just wonder why Christopher Paolini did not make any comments though he was advising the movie directors. Cheers! Ram
