Are you still human if you're dead ?

I just finished watching the movie " the cube " , you know , the one where the protagonists find themselves trapped in a complex structure made of several cubical rooms and try to feel their way out through booby traps and blind ends ..... Anyway there was a phrase in the movie : " The took away our lives , but we must remain humans , that's all we have left " So I wondered , if they take your life away , how can you still be human ? If life is at stake or lost , do morality and humanity have any meaning left ? Isn't it the most humane and moral goal to preserve oneself ?
