How many of you have self taught yourself on guitar?

I am really interested in learning to play the guitar, but sometimes I feel that I am getting too old to try to pick it up. Would it be a waste of my time to try to self teach or should I try to find someone to get lessons from?

Go for it Ray. You'll be just as old if you don't try to learn as if you do. If you find that you like it and want to learn more, then you can consider professional lessons.

My advice to you is to self-study the guitar. In my case, my brother only taught me the basics then I just self-studied all the way by buying songbooks and taught myself how to read chord charts. Guitar is easy to learn if you're just patient and you really must have a great passion to it. I know 90% of the musician's population out there will say that guitar is the most well-loved and favorite instrument of all time so I think it's already a motivation for every beginner to continue learning this instrument. Guitar is fun! It's one of the things that I can't live without. - Ron Reyes www.ronreyes.co.nr

Should I start out with an acoustic or electric? I really like the sound of electric better. Ultimately I would love to learn Blink 182.

Acoustic Guitar is more difficult to play...The strings are usually alot thicker.

Go with what you love! That's a great attitude for playing music! If you like electric guitar then go with it. Do you know Billie Joe Armstrong? the vocalist/guitarist of Greenday? He never owned an acoustic guitar when he was young. All his guitar were electric so he became good with it. He just started playing acoustic when he made the song "Good Riddance (Time of your Life)" That's what I've heard from a website somewhere. But in my case, I started playing acoustic first. Frankly, I didn't have any experience playing the electric guitar but it's basically the same. Electric and Acoustic guitars all have the same chords. The only difference is the sound that comes out. - Ron Reyes www.ronreyes.co.nr

Playing the guitar - You can learn it easily! Go for it!!
I kinda learnt the guitar in bits and pieces - few chords from my friends, a few sequences, looking at others play, chord books etc etc. Well now I'm an average guitar player but love playing the guitar. In fact I was jamming for a few minutes just before I got on the net now!! Love it. However you learn it you'll become good. Go for it and all the best!!!

Well I know 3 different people who self taught themselves guitar. The only bad thing with that is that you may teach yourself bad habits. But honestly you are never too old to learn anything. YOu only live once......so I say go for it. Besides you are not that old........and two it is not like you are wanting to learn to become a rock star.

Its never that late to start on guitar as a hobby. It is a great instrument, portable, available from almost anywhere in the world and a lot of people can play it decently. A lot of these people were self taught. I suggest you browse around for good supplements to your study. This should improve the general direction of your self study routine. Getting a tutor for this hobby would be excellent and it should be relatively affordable as well since you will only be taking basic stuff that almost anyone can teach. I got me guitar lessons when I was in grade school and I'e been self taught ever since. I do plan to take me to formal music schooling right when my finances restabilize. ^_^ Good luck in your study. Hesitate not. ^_^

I was 14 when i started learning to play guitar. Noone in our house knows how to play it so i did self study. You can try self studying first and if you can't really get it, you can always ask someone who knows something about playing a guitar to teach you. Age is not important, your willingness to learn is what matters.
