I have a very good friend who constantly worries about his appearance. He is only just into his 20's, tall, slim and good looking but suffers a little from acne which he does worry about. He spends a fortune every week on new products for his hair, teeth whitening creams, lip gloss, eye products to keep his eyes appearing bright, uses spray tans, has constant hair cuts and re styles etc and constanly seems to be trying to change his image. Its not as if he is in a job where image is important and I wonder why he feels the need to constantly change. I take pride in my appearance but think he goes to excessive levels. What do you think?

Physical appearance is an important vehicle for the development of an individuals social relations, personality and overall wel.-being. Different cultures around the world have varying degrees of importance linked to one's physical looks. Some look at it as a symbol of social status and some relates it to intelligence. The media is a very influential factor in the way people look and the way they want to project themselves. Society dictates the standard for beauty and people follow it for acceptance. Humans are innately social beings and to be accepted by others is one of their main goals. Sometimes people tend to go overboard and overdo things. In my own opinion, for as long as what they are doing is not deteremental to themselves or other people...let them do whatever they want. But if they cross that line then that is the time to take action. In the end, it all comes down to we call individuality...expression of oneself.

My worry is that there is so much peer pressure on people to have the perfect appearance. We constantly see slim, tall beautiful people in the press and if you don't fit the stereotype for your gender, sexuality, culture etc then there is pressure to conform to that image. I know my appearance is mostly dominated by the expectations of my employer. I have to dress a certain way etc but thats part of life.

I am, like, totally vain! I'm not insecure though, I just like to look good. Makes me feel good when I'm out and people tell me I look good

Well, there are certain people who are just vain. There are peopel who take it to the next level in terms of making themselves look good to the point of spending a huge amount of money too for something so small. i am concern of how i look but i dont do it every second of the day and worry about it. I think people who worry so much about how they look is a little insecure.
