UK Accountants, What was training like?

I'm currently in my second year at University studying Publishing with English, and I have no idea what I want to do with my life. If possible, I want a career where I'm not really restricted to one part of the country, although I realise that for a lot of jobs I would have to train in London before going elsewhere, which is ok. One of the careers I've been thinking about is Accountancy, because as far as I can tell, possibly naively, it appears to be a career which providing you do a good job, pays a good wage and you're unlikely to find it too difficult to get a job. It's a job I could see myself doing as although I didn't do amazingly at A-level maths, I've always been good with numbers and finances, plus I rather thrive on stress and time-pressure. What is the training period like, and how heavy is the workload at first? Do you have any stories to share about starting out in this career, or moving up the ladder? Many thanks!
