It is important to start by saying that everybody is illiterate one way or the other, or at one point or the other. If I were to go to France, Germany, Japan or China now, I will be unable to read or write in their own languages. An arabic scholar or student in my country are looked down upon as illiterates because of their inability to read or write in english, the official language. If these same people go to Saudi Arabia, they will become literate. The definition of illiteracy, therefore, has to be given in relation to a major or official language of a place, within that place and at a point in time. Based on this clarification, If I were to be illiterate in this present age, I think I would feel like a deaf, dumb and blind all at once. Illiteracy is caused by a number of factors in my own country here. They include ignorance on the part of the parents, poverty, lack of interest, low mental capacity, the need for children to help their parents in their trade or occupation, extreme religious leaning, long years of tutelage and so on.
