i am just starting to study language acquisition and i would love to hear yours memories about your children learning to talk. what are your's children's first words? how old were they? before your child could speak properly, did they have their own words for objects like blankets, pillows or concepts such as food? do you think your child's language acquisition was affected by anything around them? for example, the baby who referred to food and milk as "ginggg", mimicking the noise of the microwave. did your child have a lot of face to face interaction or were they left alone for periods, especially in front of the tv? at what age did your child began to form sentences?

This is a great discussion! I'll do my best with my memory... 1. What are you children's first words? Our son's first word was "mama" :) Our daughter's was "hi". 2. How old were they? Our son was about 13 months, while our daughter was about 12 months. 3. Did they have their own words for things? Our son didn't really at all. Our daughter though still says "cuppy" when she wants some milk or juice. 4. Was my child's language affected by things around them? Of course, but more our daughter than anything. She imitates her brothers a lot by roaring like a lion for example, or making car noises. 5. Did your child have interaction or left alone? Our son was more independent and always went off by himself to play in his room. Not so much in front of the television, but he is still independent. Our daughter is much more outgoing and loves interaction. She loves the television, unfortunately, but we don't leave her alone in front of it. 6. What age did your child begin sentences? Our son I would say around 2 1/2 - 3 years old. Our daughter is still learning that. Both our kids were/are late talkers. Hope that helps with your studies! Just wanted to point out, also, that our son is now going through speech therapy for stuttering, so I don't know if that has any effect on any of this. Just thought it was worth mentioning to you. :)
