Checking to ensure no identical discussions before posting a new discussion?

I understand that under mylot guidelines, users are supposed to check that there are no identical discussions before posting a new discussion. When I have ideas for a new discussion, I try to browse similar topics to see if anyone has posted it before. Sometimes though this can be difficult because the topics that come up after the search are rather similar. When that happens, then I'll try to discuss a different aspect of perhaps the same topic. Sometimes, I might miss because a user might have phased a discussion differently even though it's actually an almost identical topic to the one I had in mind. Generally, I think one has to use some judgement before deciding whether or not to post a new disussion since some people may feel its the same discussion whereas others may think that discussing a different aspect of the same topic is considered something different. Do you check to ensure that there are no identical discussions prior to posting a new discussion? Please share your stories and your thoughts. Thanks.
