Hi my name is Damien and next year I hope to stand for Mayor of London. One of my goals will be to make the London underground as cheap as possible if not free. And i was wondering if anybody on here can come up with a way that it could generate enough cash to cover its running costs in replace of what the fares bring in?
Hope to hear your ideas
thanks

I wish you the best of luck! my daughter pays an arm and a leg to travel into the centre of London every day for work, as do most of my family and friends.

The solar panel idea is not a bad thought but i suppose it wouldn't work with many of the central London underground trains that rarely see day light but the stations could definitely have solar panels on them and the trains could be fitted with the same type of energy saver that new diesel vans are installed with were they have a new type of engine that generates its own electricity wile its moving and only requires a small amount of power to get it started after its stopped.

My son has an idea, how about Solar panels on all train roofs and wind turnbines at stations to generate enough power to run the trains, which would cut the cost and make it eco friendly, the only other cost to cover is for train drivers and maintenance.

Why do you want to make it free. Its a service and if you lived in Ireland like me you would gladly pay for the underground service and wouldnt care how crowded it was. I travel 3 miles to work by car as there is no alternitivetive. It takes an hour on the congested Dublin roads. Your underground links every part of the capital city and is regular and reliable even if overcrowded. We dont have that in Dublin.

I would like to make the underground free because it is a public service and I believe that all public services should be free, its role is to serve the people who do not have a car or do not wish to use there car. I do agree that if you came from some ware like Dublin were there is no public transport system to get you around the city then you would be happy to pay for it but Londoners have had the Underground for all there lives and we are all use to it and so people don’t like the high prices, as it is now the most expensive in the world. I am sure that if there was an underground system in Dublin then people wouldn’t mind paying but after maybe 20 or 30 years then people will start to complain about the prices, people hate felling like there getting ripped off and always want to spend as little of there money as possible.
