Okay other parents, I realize that it has been a long time since I was in grade school, but jeez, is it just me or are they schools sending home a lot of home work???
And the testing. I remember taking tests (the state wide kind) but I don't remember doing it on a yearly basis. Nor do I recall having a test review packet sent home on a weekly basis. Seems like that is all that 4th grade is about - passing the LEAP test. Are they teachers actually teaching?? If they are shouldn't my kids be able to pass any test they are given without all the stress. I mean the system is pushing the test so hard that we have kids having nervous breakdowns.
Recess, thing of the past as near as I can tell. Unless you call running laps on a rainy day recess. When pray tell do my kids get to be kids? During their shortened summer? And mine are not even involved in all the sports, musical indeavors and such that so many other kids are. I guess that mine are destined to be underacheivers because I work for a living and it seems that all the games and practices are scheduled at times we can't make. Oh yeah and my kids go to bed at eight at night so those really late games are out of the question, too.
On the brighter side, my kids are respectful(Mostly), good students (mostly) Don't spend more then 30-45 minutes on tv, movies, or video games (ever), don't own I-pods, cell phones or hand held video games, And we play word games and talk to each other when we are traveling instead of zoning off from each other into personal entertainment devices.

maybe u should look into alternate schooling. i homeschooled my older two children and they thrived wonderfully, my husband and his x wife still homeschool their children whom are also thriving, well above any standardized test scores. my youngest is only a year old and we are already sure he's not going to public school. he may go to private school or i may return to homeschooling. i do remember the tests as a big deal when i was a kid tho, especially 4th and 6th grades.
if you don't like how your children are being educated then it's time for you to take charge of their education. there are charter schools which are wonderful for actual education without stress on standardized testing.

Yeah, that's called "No Child Left Behind" It totally sucks. Schools no longer teach so that the students can learn. They teach only the test so that the kids can pass just those tests.
My daughter is in 1st grade and official testing doesn't start until 3rd grade but even in 1st at her school they have some kind of standardized test every month. It is a constant thing. Luckily they also do other fun stuff and they have outside recess even if the weather isn't great (as long as it is over 35 degrees they are outside).

We be in the deep South, here they think two flakes constitutes a blizzard. I want my kids to educated, but I'd like them to be well rounded and the fun of learning seems to be drying up.
