How much tv do your kids watch?

Sometimes I think that's all my kids like to do is watch tv. They can go for hours. some days it bothers me and others it doesn't. I feel that I didn't put enough rules in place with tv watching. Is it too late to try and change it? Should I change it? My kids are 7,9 and 11 and they all are really good students. Any responses would be much appreciated!

I have a 12 year old still at home. I am lucky in that my son is very active and seems to have a well rounded list of hobbies and interests. But I have to be honest with you we are TV junkies in this family even if we are doing other things the TV is on. I have several shows a week I hate to miss. So its hard to lay down rules when MOM and DaD enjoy the TV also. We each have our individual hobbies and entertainments but as I said the TV is on in the back ground. I would not worry about it as long as your kids have good friends, good grades and enjoy other activities that involve physical means of motion. They are fine mom.

Thanks for your response. I guess I just needed the reasurance because I have a sister in law that does not let her kids watch any tv and my in laws have always commented on how much tv my children watch. Yes, I know why do I let them bother me so?!

i dont know if what i have to say really applies but oh well i'll put it out there anyway. my daughter is 2 1/2 and she is talking as much and as well as a 5 year. do you know where she learned most of her speech...cartoons. there is so much educational shows on television now that i think children should watch. i have my tv set to the noggin chanel from 6:30am to 6:00pm(then adult time after that..lol) i think if you just moniter what they watch and view they're shows yourself to see what you think. after that make the decision whether or not to cut back.

My children used to watch a lot of those educational show as well, but now they are a little older and they like anything on the disney and cartoon net work. There are some show that they are not allowed to watch, but most of them are ok other than me just thinking they are stupid.

yeah. cartoon network does have a bunch of shows that are rediculously stupid and not good for children. especially at night the adult swim. what kind of crap is that. ya know? i mean, come on, some kids do watch tv at night, like while going to sleep and then those shows come on. geez, some things are horrible. and disney channel just has some dumb shows also. we dont watch disney. just noggin and nick jr. then at 6:00pm all the kids shows end until the next day. so after 6 she only has an hour before bedtime and we spend it together as a family doing puzzles or coloring or singing. different things just to keep her from the adult oriented cartoons and shows that are on after that.

I don't believe it is ever to late to implement new rules . My children watch what they want on t.v and it doesn't bother me . It bothered me more when they were younger then it does now . When my older children were younger they did not much watch much t.v at all as I felt that it would stop them from having thier own idea's and creativity . Now that I have little one's in the house , I don't feel the same way . My three year old watches a lot of television but I feel that it has helped her with her imagination and she is much smarter then my other children were at this age . There are so many educational shows on television and some of them can teach things that I never would be able to do such as different languages as I only know the one language . I don't have a problem with it as that is all she watches and she loves the shows she watches so it is not a problem with us , it does bother the older children once in awhile when they would like to watch something and she gets very upset that they are taking her t.v as she now feels the t.v belongs to her but on the most part , I don't have any problems with it . But if you feel that your children are watching too much then I don't see that it matter how old they are too change the rules :)

Thats a very good point you make. My grand children love Noggin, and I have found that they know their colors can count and even say their ABC's so much faster than did their fathers who did not have as much education programming as we do now. Hey I even love some of those shows such as blues clues, and oh my gosh I am crazy about Laurie Berkner who sings during the breaks.

I guess your right about implementing new rules. I just wanted to know what other people thought about too much tv. We used to have one night out of the week that the tv was not allowed on and we did things together as a family. Not sure why we got away from that. (life I suppose) Thanks for your response.

I know that my son watches too much TV, but so do the rest of us in this house. Like someone who responded before me the TV is always on in our house. The one upstairs is usually tuned to CBC kids in the morning and some kind of DVD in the afternoon. Downstairs it's usually on treehouse in the morning and HGTV in the afternoon. My son talks very well, understands conversations around him and he just turned two. My neice who watches almost no television doesn't communicate well at all. My son is also very active. He runs around all day so I don't need to worry about a little couch potato. If you want to change your kids habits then it is never too late, but if they are good students anyway I don't think you really need to worry.

I really appreciate your response. I am realizing that it's ok and I shouldn't be too worried. This week was there spring break and the few times we had their friends over my kids actually played with their company rather than sit in from of the tv. In the past they would just sit and watch tv I had to force them to turn it off and go play while a friend was over. So I was very happy to see that this week.

Well, in my opinion.childrend should not spend too much time on tv.First,it is not good for health. Second,it will waste lots of time which can be used to study. And kid can be addictive to watching tv.Take my son for example, sometimes i watch a film on tv,and he will join me.He just sits there quietly for almost two hours. And after two to three days of watching films,he seems get addictive to it. Even on schooling days,he want to watch a film too. When i ask him"how about go out for a walk?"He replys"no,i want to watch a film tonight". So i limit his watching tv time strictly. There are sure some good programmes for children on tv.And i often let him watch 0.5-1hour 's tv.
