I have to assure you that it is lifetime experience going to a hot spring in Japan, especially during Winter time.
Hot Spring is called "ON SEN" in Japanese language. There are many types of hot springs in Japan, indoors and outdoors, gender separated and mixed, natural or medicated, etc. Many hot spring bath are runned by hotelers. However, if you are not interested to stay overnight in one of these hotels, you can still opt to hourly operated ON-SEN. Charges are varies according to the types of hot spring.
I have once went with my girl friends to the Hakone Hot Spring, located somewhere on the way down from Mt. Fuji, heading to Tokyo City. It is only 1250 Yen for 3 hour session (~USD11). The experience is awesome! The outdoor temperature is only about 10 degree, and the hot spring water is boiling, brewing, bubbling; Steams are rolling up from the water surface. Our upper body part i.e. face and neck are freezing cold, but the lower part of our body is inside the bubbling hot spring water. At the beginning, you will feel very hot, like you're boiling yourself like how you cook an half-boiled egg, but after a moment later, when your body is adapting to the hot temperature, your body will start to discharge and you actually feel ultimately comfortable and relax.
Outdoor also offers spectacular view of the beautiful Fuji mountains, valleys, rivers or sea shore. It feels so good that you almost forgot everything.
I am so envy of those living in Japan. They can go to on-sen every weekend. C'est la vie.
Do you have similar experience? Do you wanna share with us?
