A lot of people will wait til the last minute to go see a dentist when in pain!

Which really is ridiculous when you think about it! Most people either are running around completely uninsured (such as myself) or they do not have comprehensive dnetal coverage with their general health care plan provider. . Whichever is the case (and often friends of mine with full coverage still won't go until they look like they went 3 rounds with Mike Tyson!)many people who are fearful of the dentist will cite financial inability as the root of the reason for the delay when in fact they are just scared of the pain. JUST SO THAT YOU KNOW!! The longer you wait the worse the pain will get due to the infection of the tooth in the midst of the decay. Well infection and the accompanying puss, which surrounds the root of the tooth when there is an infection, neutralize the pain killing properties of novacaine and lidocaine. The inflamation of the infection also increases the overall sensitivity to the tooth because the swelling is cramping not just the root of the infected tooth but also the teeth next to it on either side! This cuases increased sensitivity and outright pain to the patient when the dentist attempts to work on the problem. So we are the architects of our own painful visits to the dental chair. Then we treat him like he has done something to us (our dentist) because he hurt you extracting your tooth or drilling and filling it, when we are the culprits to be held responsible not the dentist!

Preventative maintenance is the key. Your dental hiegene is very important to your health over all. Poor dental hiegene can cause a variety of problems down the road not to mention the stench of ones breath. I find it most interesting how people would put more time and money into their vehicles care and maintenance.DELAY CAN CAUSE DECAY!. I truly believe as you have stated in your question Ms.Sharine74 that the greatest reason for not seeing the dentist on a regular basis is "FEAR!!!". P.S. I liked your Mr.Tyson analogy to tooth decay.

I certainly will not wait if I was having pain with my teeth or my gums. Fortunately I do have dental coverage and it pays for most of the costs. I see my dentist twice a year as it is recommended that we see a dentist every 6 months to make sure we have healthy teeth and gums. We should not put off the pain and wait to see the dentist like you mentioned. I have not had pain in my teeth since I was younger and had my wisdom teeth taken out.

I agree with you. I also wait till I could not take the pain anymore. I don't know but it seems I just don't like going to the dentist. Especially if it's not on my regular schedule to see one. Thanks for all the info though, next time, I won't wait longer.
