Just a friendly reminder. Do you have a smoke detector or carbon monoxide......

detector?
Do you check the batteries or other power source on a regular basis to make sure they are working?
It would be wise to have a special time set aside for this to ensure you are constantly protected.
For instance, the first day of every month without fail.
The 15th and the 1st of the month would be even better for all the time it takes. Especially when it comes to the safety of your family.
I have a small one bedroom condo and I check mine about every 3rd day, because that's how often I burn the freaking toast and the smoke detector is sensitive and lets me know it is working every single time.
On a more serious note, if you have not checked your detectors for months, maybe take a 5 minute break from your computer right now and have a look...
It may save your life and the life of every other person and pet in the house.

you know I don't even have a smoke detector, I know it is bad and I should have one, but I cannot afford to buy one at this time.

You should talk to your local fire department about that. Just tell them what you told us and see what happens.

Excellet topic! I also live in a condo and my smoke detector goes off most days when I make toast, but it is one of those that is connected to an electirc wire and has no batteries. All I have to do is to check if the green light is still on, if it is red it needs to be replaced. Just yesterday we had a very tragic fire in one of the units on the ground floor. An elderly handicapped couple was trapped inside their unit until the fire department arrived. The lady had to be revived by CPR and both of them are in intensive care fighting for their lives. It should be a regular routine in every household to check the smoke detectors. As you say it could save your life.

We have a smoke detector downstairs, and i want to get another for upstairs just in case, as the house is quite a long house (long & skinny as it's a terrace). My partner periodically checks it, i'd say maybe once a month, so our particular alarm starts to beep intermittantly when the battery is running low so we'd know about it anyway. I think getting a carbon monoxide detector to have near the boiler would be a good idea too, but they are a bit pricey. They really should be much cheaper. I know you can get free fire alarms/smoke detectors fitted by the Fire Brigade in the UK, but not sure if they fit the carbon monoxide detectors. Maybe i should look into it!?!

I would, because carbon monoxide, unlike fire, is virtually undetectable. It is known as the silent killer.
Anytime you are using gas in the home, you should really have a carbon monoxide detector.
Possibly if you look around you can find a brand that is reliable and at the same time affordable.
