My son has a fear of going in plane!

My son is scared to go into a plane because of what happened with the 911. I have explained to him that security is a lot tougher now and it probably won't happen again. We would like to go interstate later this year to see some friends and flying is our only option. Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to make it easier for him. Thanks!

I was a bit leary of flying after 9/11. Unfortunately, it was the quickest way to commute from New York to Illinois for family visits. Perhaps you could show him some of the policies that airports are taking to help ensure our safety. You can probably go to any airline website and print out the policies. The flights I have flown on are filled to the max. One of the things the terrorists preyed upon was to get on flights that were not even half full, therefore less resistance from the people that were on board. The more people, the better chance of overtaking a terrorist or someone else with bad intentions. I always remind myself that the pilots and crew don't want anything to happen to bring the plane down. They have families and loved ones they want to see again. They will do their best to assure our safety on the airplane.

I have actually taken my son to the airport a few times and showed him the security there, but I haven't thought about showing him the policies before. Thanks for this advice!

I am probably going to take him to meet a pilot that has been flying for years to see if that will help him. I found out this week that my second son wants to be a pilot, so I am glad that he doesn't have a fear of flying too. He was really too young when the 9/11 happened, I don't think he remembers it. Thanks!

I havent been a plane myself so I cant really give you any hints. How old is your son? My 12 yo flys to his fathers and back quite often. Its only 300 kms away and only a small charter plane. He has no fear of the planes and it doesnt seem to worry him. Best of luck though, it wound be a real bummer not to be able to go if you cant get your son on a plane.

My son is 11 years old. I have explained to him that once its start going that he would probably feel better about it. I can understand why he has a fear about it though, but I think he would overcome his fear if he goes at least once. Thanks!

Maybe you can have him talk to someone who is a flight attendant or pilot, or even someone you know who flies a lot. They can tell him how safe it is and their experiences. Good luck!

My husband flies a lot and it doesn't seem to matter to my son that his dad flies a lot. My husband has tried to tell him how nice it feels flying, but it doesn't work. Maybe a flight attendant or pilot would be the way to go. Thanks!

Well maybe you can visit your doctor for some relaxants for him if he is old enough to take it. Its just for the ride.

I have thought about this, but I am hoping to avoid that. I will go and ask my doctor if there is something my son can take to help him if it comes down to it though. Hopefully it wont though. Thanks!
