I was just reading a discussion that one of my friends started and there was a picture that I posted being used for someone elses avatar! It isn't on my profile page because I couldn't figure out how to put it there but that doesn't mean that I didin't want o use it myself one day! I was shocked and a little bit annoyed! Tell me, is this allowed?!

You can use any picture for your avatar,as long as the picture not disobeying the rules.

Yes, that I know. But the question is -- is is against the rules to take someone elses photo?

I am not really sure I would check with myLot admin. However if you have posted it then I don't believe you have any copyright to the photo. That is why people are warned not to post anything on the web you dont want to be used by anyone else. Think of it that someone must have really thought it was a nice picture. Is it the one you are using now? Or is it in your profile photos?

It is a really nice picture. No, this is my dog, the pirated one is a picture of my neighbors Albino peacock. Thanks for the response!

I remember your discussion about that photo. It was so beautiful I even told my best friend about it, I am amazed that it belongs to a neighbor I thought it was from a zoo someplace. What a shame but I shall watch out for it as I do think it was a not very nice thing to do.

Yes, I love to look at him, he really is beautiful. I hate it when he starts singing, though! Sound like a woman screaming or in pain. It's amazing how such and awful sound can come out of such a magnificent creature!

i havent come across this yet but i honestly dont think there is anything we can do about it. When you upload a photograph onto mylot you agree to it being displayed on the site. Anyone could copy and paste them, then make them into an avator. I dont think there is a mylot rule against it, but i cant imagine why anyone would want to do it blessed be

That's really annoying. Now if I want to use it, everyone will naturally assume that I am stealing this persons' avatar! Thanks for responding!

I hate to tell you this.....but since you do not own the copyright to the picture....anybody can use it as they see fit. That is one of the downsides of using the internet. If you post something like a picture on a public website anybody can save the picture on their computer. Just because it's legal....doesn't make it ethical to do so. You should be careful on what pictures you put up....unless you don't mind others being able to use them for whatever. I know of people that emailed pictures to others(revealing pictures that is)....just to have them end up on some site that they may rather not have had their picture on. There is not a lot you can do about that.....except....don't post pictures you don't really want to share. I know myLot makes you feel save....because it's like a little community and you would think you can trust others.....but never underestimate people and don't post any personal information. I'm really sorry that someone invaded your privacy like that....but I'm afraid there is not a lot you can do....other then take it as a lesson learned.

True. And I guess I really don't care. I was just so surprised! I put the picture there for others to enjoy and, obviously this person is enjoying it quite a lot. I should be flattered. But you are right. lesson learned. Thank you.

Strictly speaking, this is not banned here and hence people can do it. But, ethically speaking they should not do it without checking with you. Mylot infact says that when you upload any picture it becomes a public property and can be used either by mylot or it's users. If I would be one of those who want to use other's pictures, personally I would send a message to the person and use it only after he/she approves of it. But, not everyone is like that. Cheers! Ram

Yeah, if they had ask I would have been very happy to let them. It seems like common courtesy to me, but I guess it really doesn't matter. After all, it;s just a bird not me or a family member!

This is just my opinion dear. It really depends if the picture is a personal one or if it's something that you downloaded from another website then of course it doesn't have any copyrights at all and anybody can use it. But then again, like I said, if it's a personal picture then of course they should have first asked permission from you.

No, it isn't a personal picture, but it is an unusual one. It is a picture of my neighbors bet albino peacock and they are not common. I guess I was just really shocked to see my photo as someone elses avatar! Thanks for your response!

I have no clue if it's against the rules or not to have a photo stolen and then the other person use it for an avatar but it's happened to me. I was posting one day and I went to read what other people had. Then I saw this avatar that looked a LOT like a photo I had uploaded. I checked, and sure enough that was it! I was a little ticked off about it because I feel someone should atleast be polite enough to ask. I mean it says right under the pic who uploaded it. If she had done that, I'd have been fine with it but she didn't so I wrote something a little bit cheeky. Just to let her know that I noticed her avatar as my picture.
