If you check out Book 6, "HP and the Half-Blood Prince," Buckbeak is back with Hagrid. They renamed him "Witherwings" but it was acknowledged during a conversation between Harry and Hagrid that it was the same one.

I just read this part in book 6. Yes, Dumbledore mentioned to Harry (when he picked him up from the Durley's) that Sirius left everything to Harry. The house(given to the Order of the Pheonix), the house elf (now working in the Hogwarts kitchen), and Buckbeak (now called Witherwings). Harry told Dumbledore that he could go back to Hagrid.

Really? I thought Hagrid was taking care of him again? I don't know, I'll get back to you after I finish reading book 6. I'm going to read it again since book 7 is on it's way. :)
