Time to rant. I am so sick and tired of hearing things like, "this is America and we speak English." And hearing all those stupid "jokes" about illegal aliens. Perhaps we have all forgotten that it wasn't all that long ago that the Europeans came to this country and took the land and forced the native population to go to their schools, and speak their language, and worship thier gods and abandon their culture. And when the natives rebeled against it, they were slaughtered and forcibley moved to land that was considered worthless in the hopes that they would all jsut starve. And now the descendants of those very same people are the ones screaming about this being their country and the illegals sould be shipped out. Grow up! We have never had only one language and likely never will. Should people come here illegally? No. But then, maybe it shouldn't be so hard to get the papers to do so legally. Time to stop whining and try to find a positive solution to the problem.

The positive solution to the problem is to defend our nation the way the natives tried to defend theirs. THE ILLEGALS BROKE THE LAW. Period. Getting the papers to come here legally is not that difficult for someone who truly appreciates freedom and wants to participate in our culture and our society. Part of that participation also is speaking our language. Much the same as I would never immigrate to Germany without learning their language. Nor would I expect them to teach me in English. The problem is most people are too unwilling to face challenges in order to better themselves.

I'm not disputing the fact that we took over the land from the Natives, nor am I disputing the fact that Americans migrate all the time to other countries without knowing the languages, but I am stating that if ANYONE, wants to become a citizen of another country they should know the language, the culture and the laws. Furthermore, while the Native Americans had residence here, there was no established country. EVERY country was formed by someone other than who was native there.

I agree. However, this country has NEVER been a country with only one language. Before the Europeans came here the Natives have many languages. Then the English came and the Portugese, the Germans, the French and the Asians. We have never had just one language spoken here. It has been part of our charm and part of our culture.

Actually, it is that difficult. But aside from that, do you mean to say the when the Europeans came here 200 years ago, they all spoke Cherokee, or Suix, or Arapaho or any of the hundred or so languages that were native to this land? And people "migrate" to Mexico every day without knowing a single word of Spanish. In fact, Americans move all over the world and know little or nothing about the culture or language that they are going to.

Okay....I don't want ot step on anybodys toes here.....but I have a few things to add to this discussion. As you may know I'm from germany and I went through the immigration process.Yes it was hard for me....but you know why?Because I speak english quite well....I don't get any help from any organization to fill out my paperwork or to make sure I'm doing everything correctly.....but I managed to get it done anyways."It's to hard" is just a excuse if you ask me. So now you tell me how you would feel knowing that the person that works along side you everyday....takes home a bigger paycheck than you....simply because they do not pay any taxes and a big portion of the money they do make here goes back to Mexico to support their family.Really good for the the country....isn't it? It's not the fact that they come here that bothers me....it's the fact that they act like the people that already live here owe them something.Do you realize that there are millions of americans living below the poverty line....I mean doesn't that tell you that there is barely enough to take care of the people that are already here.....but yet you would let everybody just come on over and depend on the goverment to take care of them. Everybody should be allowed to come here....but they'd better be prepared to support themselfs and their children and pay taxes just like everyone els. I speak german, english and yes even spanish....but the point is....I took the time to learn it.I could have just as well figured that everyone els should learn german....since that is my native language. My stand on this is....if you don't make any effort to adjust and learn....than yes....you should be send back home.

If it's for someone that is being prosecuted in their own country....for whatever the reason may be.....yes I agree....we should help.Simply because those people are usually more then willing to do whatever it takes to become a part of this country. The reason they are having such a hard time obtaining a visa(which you have to get through the Consulat of the country you are planning on going to)is because......the U.S. is being flooded with loads of immigrants(both legal and ilegal)each year. I do think the goverment should have guidelines that give people which face prosecution priority.....but in reality that is not the case.It can take month for them to decide if you qualify or not and by then it may already be to late. My husband was the reason I came here....had it not been for him....I would not have moved here 13 years ago. I guess my point is....if you have a good reason why you want to live here....than you should be allowed to do so.....but if you are only here because you think you deserve a piece of the the pie and that the rules that everybody ells has to follow don't apply to you....than no....you should not be allowed to be here. I don't just feel that way with immigrants....but with Americans as well.If you are able to work....but choose not to and rather live of the goverment...than you should be send away.Just where do you send those kind of people.....if we don't want them....who will? It is sad to see someone that has worked all their life....just to end up living below poverty when they are old enough to retire....simply because....to much of the money they had given to the goverment each year....is being handed out to people that have done absolutely nothing for it. I'm sorry....I guess I really went on a rant here....but it's the bad apples that spoil the bunch and those are the ones we need to get rid of and that is where the immigration and wellfare laws lack the most.

I can't speak on the subect of immigrants that simoly come here to sponge off of the government. I have never met any of these people. But I have met many of they other kinds of immigrants and I guess that's why it bothers me so much to hear people rant about how horrible they are and they need to learn OUR language. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your well thought out and intelligent response. I agree with you on nearly everything! Thank you again!

Yes this nation was founded by immigrants. It was founded by people who came here legally and wanted to build a better future for themselves. They came wanting to join society, to become members of the community and to strive to make this country better. I doubt anyone has a problem with the immigrants that come in this way. That is not the problem. Illegal immigrants are another story. They break the law in coming into America why do you think they would respect any other laws we might have? Most who come illegally do not come here wanting to join into society and make things better for themselves and to make this country stronger. They come and start knocking down this country. They drain it's resources and then complain when we do not kow tow to them. That is what aggravates people. Those are the ones people have problems with. The ones who strive to take as much as they can without giving anything back. The ones who undermine our country and it's people.

Legally by who's standard? Certainly not by the standard of standard of the, then current legal residents. I am absolutly certain that my ancestors did NOT want to be slaughtered in their sleep, killed by deadly diseases and marched across the country at gunpoint simply because the Eurpoeans had every "legal" right to their land. Further, the vast majority of the people comming here now ARE in fact looking rto make a better life for themselves. MAny will work any job at all and live in conditions that most of us would find unacceptable in order to send money home so that their families can eat. I know many Mexican Immigrants. Whether they are legal or not, I don't know or care. Not one of them has EVER said that they think that we need to "kow tow" to them. They work two, and sometimes three, jobs and drive old junker cars that they have to constanly work on so that they can save every penny to send to their families. The people who undermine our country are the people who are isolationist and ignorant. Not the immigrants.

Thank the heavens for people like you. I wish more would think the same way you do. It's not that we should welcome illegal aliens, we just have to look back into our past, review some things, and then focus back into the present situation: globalization.

You have a very valid point there. This thinking also comes from the fact that people are very open minded when it comes to their rights, but when it's their time to suffer from it they suddenly become close minded. A similar parallel can be drawn to capitalism. As long as USSR was up and running all American companies and people were harping the capitalism tune. Once USSR went out, and outsourcing came into picture, suddenly capitalism became not so good. So it's just a question of what benefits us rather than what is ethical that governs people generally in these kind of situations. Cheers! Ram

I agree with you completely. It's just tunnel vision. People only see what they want to see and only belive what they want to believe. It doesn't have to based in fact of any kind. Thanks for the response!

This sounds like something that should be on my blog http://whatshappening-dailycomment.blogspot.com/ I often think that Americans in general are of the opinion that all the world wants to live there and then they develop the seige mentatlity. It's not the only place though, I live in New Zealand and quite a few people think that here also. Ideally we would all be able to roam the world, live where we like and not have to put up with all those barriers to entry that all countries seem to adopt. I often think the John Lennon song, Imagine, says it all. What a great place the world could be.

It is really strange to find someone who likes to have their tax dollars, that they earned legally (or did you), spent on people who dont want to obey our laws. I for one who was a legal immigrant want my tax dollars spent on legal residents of our country.

In response to your first comment I speak 3 languages how many do you speak? It seems that you refer to your ancestors being American Indian I do angree that they were the first inhabitants of this country and should be respected for that. However if Europeans had not come to this country and brought new ideas with them I doubt that the USA would have become the country it is today and it is what our country has to offer today that is what the illegals want without having earned or paid for it.

Tell me, what have you done to, "pay for it"? How much have you sacrificed to be here or to enjoy the benefits of this country? I'm very glad that you can speak three languages. Goes to prove my point. I wish that I could speak all languages but I can't and, frankly, that isn't the point. And being nasty really isn't either. If you can't respond in a manner that is polite, then please refrain from responding at all. I was born in this country. My family has been her for hundreds of years. I love this country and I don't want to see it defiled by hatred any more that it already is. I happen to know many immigrants and, as I have stated before, I know them to be hard working people. They risk their lives to come here. They put themselves in bondage to stay here. They leave their families behind -- sometimes to never see them again so that they can just live because the persecution in their home country makes them subject to immedeate execution if they go home. I'm not saying that we should just open the door asn not pay any attentio to who comes here. But we DO need to make it easier for people to do so easier that it currrently is. And we need to stop expecting them to speak "our" language. Because we don't have one. THAT is my point.

True the US does not have an official language, but considering the majority of us speak english and our country revolves around the english language, it would probably be useful to perhaps learn it. How can you function in a country if you cannot communicate with them? I have no problem with immigrants coming here 100% legally, but the fact is, most of them are illegal. Even if they have papers claiming that they are "legal", most of those people snuck over to America to get money, then went back to Mexico to buy their papers from someone. Which is...ILLEGAL! They pay someone to say that they've been working for them all along in Mexico, earning this money when really they hopped the fence and got paid under the table in America. It is a problem and instead of being nicer, we need to become more strict. We fought for our freedom to get where we are today. Immigrants need to work for it as well.

I agree with wertzburg1. I would like to add that if you move to most countries I think they would expect you to know their language how can you live in a place where you don't speak the language. Seriously I don't get it. I don't understand why we are forced in high school to take a foreign language when most schools only offer spanish
