I wrote a poem and POETRY.COM wants to publish it in a book, but they dont seem to pay me for my work. They even want to charge me for a copy of the book. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a legitimate place to get paid for Poetry? Thank you for your time.

I have submitted lots of poems to poetry.com and have gotten letters from them on every poem I submitted saying it was going to be published in books. I didn't want to buy the book or the "award" and figured I could always get it later at a book store. Last year I got all the letters out copyed all the titles of the books and set out for barnes and nobles to buy them. I was excited I would finally see all my poems in a real book. WRONG!!!!!!! Barnes and Nobles checked out all the titles and none of them exist. I was heartbroken, my hopes were high and they got stepped on like a bug. I wish you luck in finding a real, paying publisher but poetry.com is not the way to go.

One of my poesm is supposed to have been published by poetry.com but I cannot check that since I refuse to pay for it. No publisher asks a poet to pay for the book in which he is published. Poetry.com is a scam.

To get paid for poetry yo'll need to check out the Poet's marketplace 2007. You're local library should have a copy so you don't have to drop $30 to buy a book that will help you find a market to sell a poem for $25 minus taxes. Seriously though, that is the place to go. They publish a book every year for short stories, poems, novels and magazine articles. Another good place to check is The Writer's Digest magazine. They often have poetry contests where you can get up to $500 if you win. That is a heck of alot better than the paltry $25 that a mag would pay you at scale.

I wish. There are various poetry contests out there, but the good ones are few and far between. It all comes down to who you know, or luck.

so, you did send your poem to poetry.com! No doubt, i have sent in mine too believing that i will get money from it. It was my first poem ever and i did manage to compose more later but never did i post it to poetry.com again! The same goes to me, they even asked me if i want to have a nice copy of the book and they are charging me for that. Hmm, no way!! How could they do such thing. First they told us we will get payment by simply posting our poem to them. But after all, they don't pay us but they want us to pay them. They get thousands of poems for free, compile it in a book and sell. Oh well, come to think of it again, im glad that my poem are shared to others though. :) in fact, it's my first poem ever, and there's no harm to share it with others for free ;) i will still want to try my luck if there's a site that pay for my poems. :)
