Gosh! Shogunly, with your new avatar, this is really getting a bit morbid; however! “Freedom is not free” in the sense that you must . . . - Remain vigilant about your government’s antics - Arrange your life in a way that the regime has less effect on your happiness - Possibly move to another country if your government becomes excessively oppressive (I would like to think, for example, that I would’ve fled Nazi Germany before it was too late) - in your case you should flee Gaddafy country... if someone will give you a visa. - Clarify your values and consider the consequences of your actions before making important decisions - Learn from your mistakes - Be honest with yourself and others, even if it makes you unpopular sometimes I picked this bit up from a Thoreau write-up that you may find stimulating: http://www.strike-the-root.com/52/goodson/goodson1.html

Everyone seems to be under the impression I am referring to "Jihad" or dying in religious fight . I'm not . I am talking about the whole idea that some PRINCIPLES or VALUES take precedence over self-preservation .

There is no reference to Jihad or any other Islamic thing here. Perhaps I need to improve my written communication skills, because that is what I think I am speaking about. Anyway.. Cheers!

It is scary mostly because it means so much of what we were taught when young was wrong. The implication being that perhaps the teaching of this false knowledge was delibrate to some extent? Is that what is bothering you? It use to bother me, but not any longer. I have come to realize that deceptions of this kind are pretty common place amoung the human race. Deception of one kind or another is how one group of people get another group to act not in their own best interest but to benefit them! Happens all the time. The implication that bothers me the most is the implication that it would be smart to join these other people in their devious ways. So far, I have resisted, but why? Well, there is something worth dying for. Your family and or perhaps certain friends. Especially if you can give your life to save several of them. So, I maintain these master deceivers who try to convince other people to give up their lives for the greater good, should be exposed as a way to stand against them, instead of us joining them.

Hello , red ! I understand from your responce that you think I meant (to die for Allah) and (Jihad) . Well that is not the call for sacrifice I was talking about , it is rather the more common idea that it is worth dying for one's family and loved one's and beliefs . That is what I meant when I said it's scary to realize that there actually is no meaning to sacrifice . I will try to colect my thoughts and continue explaining . I certainly would like to get an opportunity to show you and others what people here are REALLY like , because if you think there are so many people here that are genuinely ready to die for Allah or anyone else for that matter , you don't know the people here . People like to FANTASIZE about dying for ALLAH , dying for honor , etc etc of romantic notions . Actually nobody can afford to . Actually most of their energies are directed at surviving in a decadent corrupt society , the average citizen here invests too much to save his own neck to have anything left to volunteer to honorable or charitable or religious pursuits . Of course there are the losers , like there are in every society , who like to tie their own personal tragedies to GODS and HEAVENS and ANGELS and RIGHT and WRONG and JUSTICE and INJUSTICE etc Misery loves company as they say , some people choose the company of imaginary heroes of religion and sacrifice to numb the pain . It all ultimately comes down to psychology and offer and demand , some times it is boring to contemplate .

shogunly, Hello, again to you too. Thanks for the clarification. I should have realized you meant a rather complex situation. You know, it occurs to me there is a fantastic book about life, philosophy, politics, and religion residing in your mind somewhere. Of course, you could end up like Salmon Rushdie.

Shogunly, Once in awhile someone says something so different from what people expect or can comprehend that they likely misunderstand at first. That's the problem here with people misunderstanding what your thread is about. I think everyone here disagrees that there is nothing worth dying for. The concept is too radical for most people. It is too radical for me to adopt as my own belief, but I think I can understand it. The implications are extreme. So, extreme that I'm not going to talk about it here. Too many would not understand.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin; If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,-- My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori. Wilfred Owen all the best urban

well that is an interesting topic shogunly i realized that after i have been through alote of things in my life. i do think that there ar exaptionals. but i did noticed that alote of people in my country realized that also that there is not a thing that is worth dying for. it is a little problematic here. because we do relay on people who will fight wars here and danger themselfs. and when a person feels the way you said. he usually leaves the country..
