Is it true that some countries do not refrigerate their milk and cream?

My mother brought me some UHT (Parmalat brand) milk a few weeks ago. It comes unrefridgerated in a rectangular box, exactly like a large version of a juice box. It is good for 6-9 months on the shelf unopened. It's called UHT milk or ultra high temperature processing. Once opened it needs to be refridgerated and actually spoils a little faster than non-UHT milk.
It was originally manufactured in Italy and it's been available for a long time in Europe. It never went over big here in North America for some reason, probably because we like our morning Lucky Charms with ice cold milk. It is picking up in popularity here though.
I normally use non-fat powdered milk anyway so shelf life isn't an issue.

:) I don't even know there is powder milk here, I'll look for it now that you said it's available

Looks like I am getting closer. This is a good idea. I think everyone should have at least one UHT mild container on the shelf just so they don't have to run to the store for milk.

I don't remember buying liquid milk in my homeland, we mostly use powder milk so there is not much hassles with temperature when storing it. I think liquid milk is more expensive than powder in my homeland, but over here we do use liquid milk stored in the fridge.

I can't see how one would be able to get away with not refridgerating it as it would sour very fast unless someone lived in a county where it was freezing cold temperatures all the time and for some reason they left it outside but even this does not make much sence why they wouldn't just have a fridge , the only other thing I can think of for this is for those who drink powered milk and mix it and then drink it all right away .
We put our milk in the fridge here in Canada as well :)

The reason why I am asking this question is that if I remember correctly my father told me when he lived in Italy (I am not Italian) it came in a pyramid shaped container and they stored it on the table.
Just looking to see if anyone does this.
