A valid question to examine

We have had a LOT of recalls lately. Spinache, Peanut Butter, petfood, just to name a few. Today a good friend of mine asked me if I think that our imported food products are being tainted by other countries because we have picked so many fights around the world lately. I didn't have an answer for her, but I do think it's a valid question worth examining. What is your opinion?

I think it's a valid question worth checking into. It wouldn't surprise me to find it to be true let me put it that way. I hope it isn't and that it's just bad timing and luck on our parts but one does have to wonder especially when it comes to the peanut butter. The US is the main country that uses peanut butter. If it's tainted it effects a lot of us. The other things are used around the world about the same but peanut butter seems to be a mainstay here in the USA. If one wanted to cause trouble for a country tainting a product that most of the country uses would make sense especially if other countries aren't big users of it. It does make me wonder if it could be true but I don't know if we'll ever know for sure. Either way I think we should all be glad things are worse and hope that it's over for now.

It was a question that caught me off guard. Killing thousands of pets in a country that views their pets as family members, if intentional, would be pretty creative terrorism, but effective in causing pain to a whole lot of people. The wheat gluten used in these pets foods was imported from China. I'm not accusing China its'self of any wrong doing for those of you just tuning in, it could have been anyone. My point is, we are a country that spends over 20 billion a year on pet products. What better way of hurting members of the so-called "Great Satan" (Which I resent fiercly!) than by poisoning our children with the Peanut Butter and our best friends? Kinda makes you think.

I think that, perhaps happily, human error is going to account for far more deaths and fuss than terrorism ever could. It doesn't take much for something to get missed, especially in countries without perhaps the stringent checks that one would hope are the norm in the developed world. I think that the US's (or much of it anyway) obsession with price above all else is probably a more dangerous driving force to poor quality and safety for food. Buying organic or locally produced food reduces the chances of it being tainted by chemicals or whatnot.

I agree. I think we should be able to buy more of our food right here at home. Our focus on purity, for the most part, is far more scrutinized in the U.S. But, you are right, companies trying to save a few cents in order to make a fast buck don't seem to have a problem with outsourcing things that shouldn't be outsourced. Especially in this day and age. You get what you pay for. I think organic is the only way to go.

First off, I wish people speaking about their own country specifically would name it. e.g. Here in the US we..... otherwise I have to check your profile to see what you are talking about. I'm on dial-up so that takes a while. We need to remember that we are setting up discussions globally, not just to our fellow countrymen. And to answer your question...I hardly think so. Food is imported to other countries as well, not just the US.

You have been a bit testy in several of my posts. If I have somehow offended you, please forgive me. I am aware that food is imported to other countries, but as my friend pointed out, the U.S. has been picking a lot of fights lately. The thought crossed her mind that since we are stirring up so much trouble in the world then could it be a possibility that all of our recalls lately (and there have been a high number of various products recalled) have something to do with some country that we have offended? I didn't have an answer for her so I posted the question to Mylotians. Thank you for your' reply.
