A glorious day outside yet we are all indoors sitting at a computer, why?

Fighting the computer - Fighting off internet addiction
April 2, 2007 8:09am CST
It's a glorious day outside, the sun is shining and the birds are singing. My lovely partner is away for a couple of days on a walking trip and I have the place to myself, so why am I sitting at a keyboard trying to find inspiration? What is is about spending hours and hours in cyberspace when the world outside is so warm and inviting? Are we all so conditioned now to communicating on the internet and not getting out there anymore? I know this questions has probably been done to death by now, but are we all really addicted to the internet?

Well, we can't blame ourselves if we spend many hours in front of the computer. I know it's much better if we enjoy nature outside but it's very inevitable to say that computer is more enjoyable than that. Well that's my own opinion. I know many people will contradict to this but for me, computer is such a necessity to anyone's life. It's a huge source of information and entertainment. Computer replaced the books from the public library and piled it all into one website (example is www.wikipedia.org). Computer also replaced TV because now we can just log-in to MSN or Yahoo for some news and just go to YouTube if you want to see music videos instead of watching MTV. There's so much benefits that we can get from the internet and we can't help ourselves to become addicted with it. I guess it's just our own choice. It's how we balance our real life and our cyber life. If you abuse either one of those, then I'm sure something bad will happen. - Ron Reyes www.ronreyes.co.nr

We are, each one of us, in some way addicted to the internet. For myself it is a means of communication, for others it is a method of shopping, a gateway to knowledge, access to music and entertainment. We all, in our way, contribute to the internet, the difficulty is often the number of hours per day we spend in front of the screen.

At least we have had another sunny day and I did actually get the chance to sit in the garden for a little while.

Why? It is because that we are glued to myLot, starting and responding to many great discussions started by our friends in myLot. Anyway, it is really hot outside and therefore, I would prefer to stay indoor for now.

Well, I am in Delhi right now and its damn hot outside. Sitting at home is much much better than going out. You are quite lucky that you have a pleasent whether at your place and if I had been at your place, I would have preferred going out.

I thought that I was addicted but as you can see, I am only just getting to responding to your topic now. We also had a glorious day and I couldn't resist spending as much time as possible soaking up the sun and breathing in all the beautiful fresh air. I will do the same again to-morrow if the weather if fine and at last I might be able to get my garden into some kind of order.

LOL - and here it is just gone 10.30 am in the UK and the rain is throwing it down :-( So much for spending a lovely day in the garden, it seems nature has set out to thwart my plans. :-)

LOL. That may have been the case a few days ago when it was close to 60 degrees outside but now it's about 25 and it snowed last night. Talk about a drestic weather change. I wonder how things are going to fair when summer finally gets here - if people are going to spend more time online in the air conditioning or be out and about.

LOL our weather has gone from brilliant warm sunshine, to heavy rain, to cold wind and back to sunshine. I guess once the summer arrives then I will probably spend more time outside though

Hehee, I just got back! I spent most of the day outside running some errands with my boyfriend, and now I'm checking a few sites before starting dinner. Get out of the house, it's beautiful!

The sun wasn't shining here today. In fact I woke up to snow. Ugh. The flurries that they forecast for us turned into a half centimetre, and came down pretty fast although the fakes were small. It has melted but it's still cold and cloudy, but they say tomorrow is going to be better so I think I shall try to get out and about for a little while. It might do me good to get some air for a change lol.

I woke up to a cold rain this morning hun, so much for my plans for spending time in the garden today :-( Still, I can always spend time here with friends - lol

I've just been outside watering my plants and I sat in the sun for a while so It can't be that bad. I do worry about the hours I spend online and not out doing other things as it can't be healthy but I am getting better I don't spend nearly as much time online as I used too and my time is much better spent actually making some money no matter how small the amount.
5 Apr 07
That has reminded me, I will have to get the grass cut over the weekend and the garden sorted out before the summer arrives. I think I will have to ration my internet time a little more, I spent nearly 8 hours on line yesterday.

I also often ask that question to myself? Why can't I abandon this computer even if the day outside is so perfect and beautiful. I'm like a prisoner of my own computer. I think I'm addicted to the internet because I just can't stand a day without being online. I think this can be modulated a bit but I really don't know how. Maybe a nice and soothing vacation will somehow help.
3 Apr 07
LOL I guess we are all internet addicts in some form or another. and maybe a break away might help.

Well even if I wasn't on the computer all the time, I still wouldn't be going outside much. I get sunburnt even with sunblock plus the outdoors aren't good for my allergies.

For me it is not so much an addiction but relaxation ( OK then addicted too lol ) My parents both have Alzheimer's and both still in their own home and I care for them , so at night I do sit in front of the PC and forget about everything else , I love chatting to all my new online friends xx

I suddenly realised that I have had the computer on all day, so I guess I have to admit to being addicted. It's great to have MyLot friends here, isn't it.

I am sitting inside right now because I do home daycare. I currently have 8 children here and most of them are two years old. Can you imagine taking 8 two year olds outside by yourself? It is also cold and rainy here today. I think the internet can become an addiction just like anything else, if you let it. You just have to know when to walk away. For me, I can do this while they are napping or busy watching cartoons. In a few minutes I will be up doing a craft with them!

I was thinking the same! I'm here on the computer and it is a beautiful Spring day, however if my housemate was in I would be out in a shot! I am making the most of the peace with him NOT being in the house, why waste the precious time being out when he's out. I much rather stay in and get things done without being nagged, irritated or getting into an argument. I did walk over to the shops to get some bread so that was my bit for fresh air LOL!

*giggles* I've just been out to the shops too, the sudden realisation that I had nothing in for dinner tonight. If the weather is this good tomorrow I guess I will force myself away from the computer and into the garden.

It is now 4:40pm here and I am just getting started on myLot for my daily quota. The weather is gorgeous so I have been outside all day. So my "addiction" for myLot does not deter me from enjoying the spring weather, now I am hoping for a rainy day to catchup and because we really need it here. We can only water our lawns on designated days and it is also so expensive to pay for water.

I think I will have to try and get my front lawn cut tomorrow if the weather is good, and maybe cut back on my hours in front of the screen. I think today has been the exception for me, I seem to hae been here all day :-)

Well, being addicted to the internet has nothing to do with inside or outside. If you have a laptop and you have access to wifi, why, you can surf wirelessly at the beach! :P But yes, we are all addicted to the internet.

Hello Wizard :-) The internet is a thief of time I guess. I know I should be out and about and doing other things, but somehow I find myself thinking *just a few more moments* and the time slips away. :-)

nah It is not, it seems like the weather is snivelling, no really. It is warm-cold, it rains like a wimp, then shuts off then come the winds, and then everything quiets down, but the sun is not out, suddenly it will pour for several minutes and then like a tap shut off the rain would stop altogether! Yes it is bad weather. I don't want to be outside when muLot is keeping warm and nice. By the way I like your name Recycledgoth. :)
