My mum will be turning 75 towards the end of this month. I have asked her if she would like a morning tea and we could invite a few friends. I would probably make it all buffet style and hold it in the garden weather permitting. She said she does not know if that is what she wants. I am going to suggest that we do this with her friends the day before and on the day of her birthday invite the close family. It would be too much for her to do it all on one day. Or we could all meet for dinner somewhere. Have you got any suggestions for me.

Oh my, I'm not a tea drinker but morning tea in the garden just sounds so elegant - I want that for my birthday :) Your mother's hesitation may be a combination of things; she may be concerned of your doing too much, that her friends may not be interested, or that she may not be up to so much. Of course I don't know your Mum or the situation but these are things you may think about and deal with as needed. A lady I help occasionally had her birthday last fall and her family made a huge deal of it - she was thrilled and grateful they did it but also it was a strain on her and she was tired for days afterwards.

I am going to talk to her again about what 'she' would like to do. I can understand parties however small being a strain on the elderly. Also my mum is a very caring person and could well be worrying that I will have too much to do. Thanks for your valid input.
