It's amazing how different life is now than it was even 80 years ago. I found out recently that my Grandmother who was expecting was miliking the family cow, which was the only way that they family got milk, cream and butter when she went into labor. Granddaddy was off working at the sawmill. Anyway, Grandmom went into the house gave birth to her yougest daughter, cleaned herself and the baby up, gave the baby to her oldest daughter (11year old) to watch and then Grandmom went back outside to finish milking the cow. Today I constantly hear stories about how tough the labor was and how quickly the new Mommy's have to leave the hospital and how awful it is to have to go back to work so quickly after giving birth. Granny puts us all to shame.

It is amazing what you can do when you have to. People in general, including me, are so spoiled nowadays. Three weeks before my second child was born my husband was fired from his job. The stress caused me to go into labor early. Six days after she was born I was back at my old job, managing a gas station. I cried because I was wanting to stay at home with my new baby but, you do what you have to in order to get by. Your grandmother was a pillar of strength and obviously a "no-nonsense" kind of person. I applaud her and her ability to put family first.

Sounds like you're pretty tough yourself. And you are right Grandmom was quite something.
