For most people these plants are tough as nails but mine is very unhappy. Can anyone tell me the best way to look after an aloe vera plant? I'm prepared to completely repot it and move it round the house as needed, its just not doing well at the moment in a soil based compost on a bright windowsill with intermittant watering (when I remember basically).

I dont grow these plants, but my grandmother has successfully for many many years. What I have observed from her plants is that she doesn't keep them in direct sunlight to my knowledge. She has all of her aloe plants in the entry way to her home on plant stands in a well fertilized sand/potting soil mixture, in mostly big size pots to encourage larger growth. The plants receive filtered sunlight daily, and seem to do very well. She is always giving us aloe for our cuts and burns.

Try repotting the aloe vera plant. Before watering put a layer of sand under where the aloe leaves may be touching the dirt and water thoroughly. Make sure as well to give it some plant food. Instead of watering it whenever you remember to, try watering it once a week. Keeping it in a well lit area.

Repotting is the best thing you can do. Aloes don't like regular soil. They really do need good drainage. Get some cactus soil instead with sand, as these plants don't actually like to have their roots wet all the time.
How intermittent? Once a month? More? Less? I suggest once per week. Mine seem to do fine with filtered sunlight, though my dad's seemed to do just fine in full sunlight.
