My husband and I are in contention on this point. He says he is not superstitious and yet he says that Friday the 13 is a day for BAD LUCK. I just don't believe in good and bad luck. Everything happens for a reason.
Apparently, when my father-in-law was alive, if a black cat walked across the street in front of his car, he would stop and back up and find a place to turn around and go the other way. I guess if my father-in-law was superstitious that explains why my husband is.
The reason people said it was bad luck to break a mirror is because mirrors used to be very precious and special glass that was expensive. For someone with a meager salary it might take 7 years to replace it.
If you walk under a ladder, it could easily upset whatever is up there, whether it is a person, a bucket of paint or a saw and a hammer. Surely if something goes wrong, this stuff can fall and hurt someone.
If you open an umbrella in the house, you can "put someone's eye out" as our protective grammas used to say about umbrellas, running with pencils, playing with shop tools, etc. When was the last time you saw an eyeball on the floor.
Every superstition is based on a sensible reason.
By the way, it just happen to be Friday June 13 (we won't tell you the year) that I got my first kiss as a young girl. (...me kicking up one toe behind me...*s8gh*....no tongue).

The luckiest day for me was February 13th, which is supposed to be the unluckiest day of the year, that was for me the most wonderful day of my life. I cam back home after months of recovering from a life threating accident.

In 1985 I went into the hospital on February 13 to prep for my brain surgery on February 14 which saved my life.
In 1991 I went into the hospital with my labor pains 5 minutes apart on February 13. It may have been bad luck because I was in labor until the evening of February 16 when I actually gave birth. But overall, after almost 4 days of labor....COUNT THEM - FOUR... I did finally give birth (without C section) to my firstborn son who has been a blessing to me for over 16 years. So this was also good luck.

oohhh I LOVE Friday the 13th and when it falls on a Full Moon (especially in the summer) I'm in my absolute glory!! Thats an extremely high energy thing for me...And I dont believe black cats are bad luck either LOL good thing too since I own one (for the second time in my life)...I think the only superstition I really have is putting shoes on the table (any table)...and things like birds flying into windows (but I've had that go into action in my life to the extreme actually..

I guess it all depends of everyone's personal experiences surrounding friday the 13th. As for me, until last year, i didn't believe a thing about it, but somehow, last year, on friday the 13th of october, my best friend lost her baby at 5 months, and my husband lost his job! Could've been just a coincidence, but everyone's first reaction when i tell them is "And it was on a friday the 13th???" Anyhow, hope this year's friday the 13ths, will be better!

I don't think it was because of the day. I've had friends lose their babies on other days when the whole pregnancy could have gone wonderfully otherwise. They were healthy women, considered to have been normal pregnancies until mishaps. There are so many reasons for things like this.
I've gotten a job on a Friday the 13th. Also just coincidence.

I never was really all that sperstitious about Friday the 13th until October 13th of last year. That was the day that my dog got out of the house. I didn't realise what day it was until almost the end of the day. My dog ended up getting hit and killed by a car but not on that day. So now Friday the 13 makes me wonder. I am not superstitious about anything else especially the black cats. I have three of them in my house that cross my path everday.lol

My dog gets out of the house and runs and it doesn't matter what day it is. Fortunately we live in an area where cars go slow enough that they see him before he gets hit. I sometimes wonder when my luck will run out but I am sure it has nothing to do with the date. Like you said, it wasn't that day when he had his accident. I am sorry for your loss though.

Friday the 13th is just a day and a date in the calendar. I'm not one to stay at home when this day comes just so I don't get unlucky. I am more cautious of having a good time on Good Fridays because as a Catholic we are supposed to meditate on Christ's sacrifice.

To tell you the truth, I dont believe in all this silly things. I am the least superstitious person and I think all this things are just waste of time.

The 13th is on a Friday?! We're doomed!
Yeah, I get a real kick out of some of those people, what with the salt throwing and all the rest.
If they would pay attention to what they were doing instead of worrying about silly superstitions, then maybe bad things wouldn't happen.

I've had quite a few fantastic birthdays on friday the 13th.
apart from some friends that weren't allowed to come to my parties in case something bad happened on that day.
13 is my lucky number. it's my birthday, my favourite album and there are 13 lunar months to the year.
and I even love the way the number looks written down.

Friday the 13th ... lol... I notice the day because everyone is scared of it, but I do not take it serious. Bad things can happen on any day of the week. I personnaly have bad things happen to me all the time....lol.. People are crazy now a days with all the weird superstitions. I do not think all of this would get so out of hand if it were not for the t.v. and all the new movies comeing out and getting everyone so jumpy. I guess the reason that this does not bother me is because scary movies do not bother me at all. The only movie that every really got to me was CANDYMAN. I watched it when I was eight years old, and now I am 23 years old, and I am still terrified of him and bathrooms.

Friday the 13th used to be a celebration day for witches in the old days, it was not associated with bad luck but with celebration and community. I will not go into why it was labeled a bad luck day, but I am sure you could figure it out. Things like having bad luck on friday the 13th or bad luck from black cats only have power if you believe they do. Just the same as believeing throwing salt over your shoulder brings good luck.

Ok I never said I was some kind of expert here. so that being said, in the spirit of friendly conversation I will explain.
When the worship of the goddess, particularly Isis, was prevelant throughout the world, and it used to be, the number 13 was thought to be sacred because it represented the number of months in the lunar calander. This was thought to be a lucky number by these worshipers of the goddess and they gathered to celebrate and give thanks to her. The day of the goddess was friday and her number 13. Here is a link

Mostly, I have found Friday the 13th to be a good day for me. If not a good day, then at least an ordinary day. But I've never had anything bad happend to me on Friday the 13th.

i don't believe the bad luck tag either. a wise man once said that we make our own luck. i think everybody concerned about this superstition should try, just for fun to be extremely cautios on that day. they will see that nothing special (bad) will happen. All bad things that can happen on friday the 13th can happen on any other day, regardless if it's monday or sunday. It's just a matter of luck versus superstitions.

Here's a few reasons why Friday the 13th doesn't bother me in the least:
1. My Dad was born January 13.
2. My Uncle was born May 13.
3. I was born April 13 (Friday the 13th this year...).
4. My daughter was born May 13.
5. My granddaughter was born July 13.
6. My grandson was born July 13.
7. My daughter was married on July 13.
8. My granddaughter's fiance was born February 13.
You could say, in my family, Friday the 13th is a very lucky day. So far we have 4 generations where the first-born child was born on the 13th. I'm interested to see if that continues as my grandchildren grow up and get married and have kids. LOL.

My mom took her driving test friday 13th and passed. My dad once won a large sum of money on that same date and day.. i do not belive that it is bad luck, but i also don´t belive that anything good happened to me that day =)

I may say that I'm a bit supertitious but I don't really believe in all especially those that are really non sense and can make your life dysfunctional. I believe in that black cat but some are not. I think people who are too supertitious are just too cautios of everything and fails to see the logic of some. I don't belive in friday 13th for me its just a date nothing special about it its just an old saying.

LOL! I would consider myself to be somewhat superstitious, although it's been my experience in my almost 43 years that something good - sometimes even fabulously wonderful - happens to me on a Friday the 13th.
I remember reading an article once on the origins of Friday the 13ths, but forget it now. According to Wikipedia, historically, there is no true date that the Friday the 13th superstition can be linked to!

glad to hear you got your first kiss on june 13th and there was no tongue lol,but friday the 13th makes me wonder every time it comes by,thats why i make i get what i have to done on thursaday the 12th so i dont worry bout leaving my house on friday the 13th.

I am not worriedabout friday the 13th either.You wonder why i say that becuase every friday the 13 i always have a good day or something good always happens to me on this day. SOme might think im weird but its true.
