It was in the PC magazine of April 2007. It said to defrag early and often, that it most times improves performance. Close all applications before defragging. Delete temp files and internet cache files using CCleaner, a free tool. Download at http://find.pcworld.com/56142 Ferret out duplicate files with duplicate file finder. Free at http://find.pcworld.com/56144 I'm not a computer expert by any means. What do you guys think of this info?

I used to be very good with defragging the computer and keeping the temp files cleaned up. I did it every week. I surf through a lot of pages on the net so it really seemed to help to improve performance a little bit. I've just gotten lazy about it lately. Thanks for the freebie sites.

This is EXCELLENT advice. I try to do it a couple times a week because I am constantly downloading, deleting, and creating and saving. Also, being on the Internet tends to mess with your hard drive, in spite of your best efforts to use good firewall and antivirus and antispyware?

I have always defragged monthly .. or even more often if I have done a lot of downloading and deleting .. I always explain defragging as being like a huge pile of filing .. if you just put each new document on top of the last document it won't be in any kind of order .. and to find one document from the hundreds will take quite a few minutes .. but if you file each new document properly either alphabetically or in date order .,. you can go virtually directly to the document you are looking for in seconds .. And that's exactly what defragging your computer is doing .. it takes all the new information that has been entered one after another and sets it up properly in perfectly filed order .. that's why it's better for your computer .. it's a lot less work for the hard drive .. and it quite a lot faster in computer terms .. it might only be a few nano seconds to us .. but that's a BIG difference in computing ..

This is all said and good. I have AllumeXP and it leads me through all the things to keep my computer running smoothly. I went to defrag over the weekend and it said that I did not need to. Great! Seems alot of work to go to those sites when I have one thing that will lead me through it all and even more things. I hope it helps someone just pays to know what else is out there.

We defrag if it is advised that we have to defrag. We also use the CCleaner everyday before shutting down the computer, yes, it's a free tool we downloaded from the internet. We also use the AVG, etc. if necessary. Thanks for giving such information.

Great information thanks for sharing. I use ccleaner all the time, almost daily. I downloaded the duplicate file finder...thank you. I think it's been a month or so since I defragged though. I guess I better do that too...lol Thanks again. I get a lot of downloads from file hippo. http://filehippo.com/

I'm not a fan of PC World, but that is good advice. CCleaner is a good program and Defragging often is a good idea. Duplicate file finder is a good program, but only delete duplicate files if you know what they are. Some games have duplicate files as backups. Important drivers also back themselves up.
