hey everyone, i need some advice - not sure what is available but my girlfriend unexpectedly became pregnant, but she does not have insurance right now (she just started a new job 2 months ago) and I don't think her insurance through work would cover her pregnancy because it is a "pre existing condition" if she were to sign up now after already being pregnant. Anyway, we were looking at medicaid and requested an application but does anyone else have some advice and/or know of any other insurance type programs or anything that would help her/us out during this? thanks

I had to get on Medicaid for my pregnancy (I am 38 weeks along right now) because my husband's insurance didn't cover me and I had to quit my job as we were moving across the country. I went without any coverage for the first 7 months and just visited a clinic a time or two that allowed you to pay on a sliding scale. I am a very healthy, active, young person and I never had any symptoms that were out of the ordinary, so I thought it was great I was able to avoid a lot of rountine doctor visits! Getting on Medicaid was super easy, and I hired a midwife that accepts it, so all systems are go. Medicaid covers her bill almost totally... we ended up paying only $250 dollars out of pocket for all my prenatal care, plus the birth. If I need to be transfered to the hospital everything there will be covered, including medication. I feel good about my choice... it was easy and I was still able to hire the type of practitioner I wanted. Good luck to you and congrats!

Thank you, this makes me feel a little better if she can get on Medicaid. I can't believe how much all this costs and I definitely will be looking forward to get some help with hospital bills and everything. Thank you for your help and easing my mind some.

Congratulations! I'm sure this must be a stressful time for the two of you as the costs of pregnancy are high. I would suggest you contact your local WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) office to see what kind of support they can offer you. I would also suggest planned parenthood and depending on your income possibly Welfare. Although it may not seem like it there are many resources out there that may be of assistance to you. I would do as much research as possible and possibly even call your personal insurance agent. (There are policies that although they cost more, cover existing conditions.) I hope some of this may be of help to you! I've posted a link to the WIC website below for you so that you can locate the nearest office! Best of luck and again congratulations! www.fns.usda.gov/wic/aboutwic/
