Google sent me to a page of links that sent me to another page of links? LOL

I don't understand the search engines that send you to a page of links that send you to another. It is like the link abyss. Why? What is the purpose? It is frustrating trying to find information sometimes.
Do you guys encounter this? Where do you search to avoid this?
