Chocolate - made from cacao seeds - for eating ( as distinct from drinking, which appeared somewhere in the 17th century) had been known in France and Italy, but the first bars of chocolate were made in a factory set up by Francois- Louis cailler at vevey, switzerland, in 1819. The first box of chocolates was made by Cadbury's in 1866 and the first milk chocolate was manufactured by Daniel peter, cailler's son-in-law in 1873.
