Night Shift

ive just finished a night shift (yawn yawn) and one of my co-workers told me something really interesting last night. apparantly working night shift for 10 years takes 10 years off your life expectancy! Why do we do it then? yes you usually earn a higher rate of pay but is it worth it? for myself i work nights because it fits in with my family. it means i can be home to see my sons off to school and home again; and be available for their out of school activities. you dont get as much sleep but at least and can enjoy the time you have available :)

i work nights to and although i like working nights i dont sleep as good during the day as i do at night if i wake up during the day i find it very difficult getting back to sleep and i do think its harder on your body because your lifestyle is backwards.i have worked nights for 10 years now i mainly do it because off the money and it can be less stressful sometimes but it would be nice to have a normal life again.i find that im always tired and when i get to my nights off i dont feel like doing much cos most of the time i only get a one night break in between my shifts and when i do get 2 nights off the first day i either stay up all day because i dont want to waste my time off or i sleep all day and awake all night it is a harder lifestyle and not a normal lifestyle thats for sure

i work nights to and although i prefer to work nights i dont sleep as good during the day as i do at night its just not the same noises, traffic and i do turn my phones down but still sometimes hear them and wake up also if i wake up durnig the day to go to the loo i find it hard to get back to sleep i think working nights is more difficult on your body and u dont think u eat properly i no i dont i miss lunch because im sleeping.sometimes it just feels like im all over the place and i`ve been working nights for 10 years now

Well not sure where she heard that but I doubt it's true. One how do you prove it since there is no way to know for sure how long anyone will live? I've known people who worked night shift all their lives and lived into their 90's, that's a pretty good life span in my opinion. Some people work better at night then they do during the day. It's how their body works that's all. So for them it might actually be better then trying to force their bodies to run on day shift. I know myself I do far better sleeping during the day and being up all night. Just how my body runs. I'm 38 and I look like I'm in my early 20's. I have health issues that have nothing to do with what shift I sleep on (car accident injuries for example) but other wise my blood pressure is good and my stress level is low. When I worked days I was so tense and miserable where as at nights I was more relaxed and did my job a lot easier. So I think it would depend a lot on the person not by some statistical information.
