If your sister found a lump in her breast what would be your advice?

My sister found two lumps in her breast but it seems to me that the doctor is moving very slowly. She has known about it for a month and still hasn't gotten her appointment for a mamogram. What advice do you have?

Go see the specialist ASAP. Might be a cancer lymph. Be careful. Never underestimate.

I'm not sure what to advise you, but if possible you should see an oncologist as soon as possible.

Thank you HerShe. I think that is good advise. I believe that she has finally gotten in to the doctor. I haven't heard yet what her results are. It is definitely something to be very diligent about, I believe.

I do not know where you are from but Oncologists here only see patients who already have a diagnosis of cancer. If the lump is or was found to be cancerous her doctor would refer her to one.

I would find another docotr who can get the mamogram done sooner. My mom gets one every year and she usually can get an apppointment the next day.

My experience has also been that a mamogram could be scheduled right away so I don't understand her doctors delay.

I would defintly have her try to see another doctor. It could be nothing and hopefuly it is however I think she should try and get an appointment as soon as possbile just incase because the ealier they find it the better. Good luck I hope it turns out to be nothing.

I haven't heard from her since she returned to her doctor so but I am hoping that it was good news and that everything is okay with her. I agree that the earlier they find it the better the results could be.

Go to a doctor who thinks it is as important as she does, a lump is nothing to take lightly! The sooner she gets seen "in case" the better.

I agree that a lump is noting to take lightly. I guess it is something that a person would prefer to pretend it isn't there. But the sooner she finds out what it is and does something about it the better her chances are for a longer life.

To be honest i would write a letter to my sisters g.p to express my concerns, I would also talk to your sister because if she can see how upset you are it may encouage her to push this on a bit I am so sorry for your news and i would like to wish your sister some luck on this.

Writing a letter sounds like a good idea. I wrote one before but I think I will try it again and let her know that I am very concerned about her making sure that everything has been taken care of even if it is very scarey for her, which I am sure that it is. I feel kind of helpless to help her because I live so far away from her.

My mom knew about one of hers for at least 3 months before she got in for an appointment. Hers turned out just fine.

If you can find a private clinic that does mamogram, book an appointment as early as possible. A friend of mine did that on her own because her doctor was slow in getting her an appointment. Thank god she was okay. But you can do a search on the net and find a clinic nearby you and help your sister. I will say an extra prayer for your sister. God bless you for being such a caring sibling. good luck.

I appreciate you relaying the experience that your friend had. I believe that my sister has finally gotten in to see the doctor again and she is awaiting the results of the test. Thank you for taking the time to reply and thank you for your prayers.

Tell her to go to another gynocologist. They always schedule my mammogram that same day. She can go to the hospital and request the test if she has insurance. If not for sure she needs to change Drs. or call her DR. and demand to have an appotinment. She is a paying cutomer and has these rights.

Hi wmg, This is an old discussion that someone revived. My sister had good news. The lumps were not cancerous and were caused by estrogen therapy. The doctor stopped her estrogen therapy and the lumps disappeared. The biopsy was benign. So that was great news. Thank you for caring.

Yes, I would try to find another doctor to get a mamogram sooner. I just had one done recently and there was no one there. I was the ONLY patient there getting a mamogram. I suspect with some calling around and persistance your sister could get a mamogram sooner. Let us know.

She finally got the mammogram. She had the lumps biopsied and it was good news. The lumps were benign and probably caused by hormone therapy. She stopped the hormone when this first occurred. Thank you for your concern.

drag her to the doctor by the collar or hair if you have to... just to have a peace of mind...

I appreciate everyone's advice. She finally got all of the things done that she needed to find out what the lumps were. It turned out, in her case, that they were benign when they did a biopsy and were being caused by taking estrogen. When the doctor took her off of estrogen, the lumps went away. She is fine now.

I hope that by this time your sister has had the mammogram and found to be okay. However if it was me, then I would not be waiting around for the Doctor to make an appointment for me. Either I would make it myself, or get another Doctor who would get this arranged more speedily. In general it is not the Doctor personally who makes the appointment, but one of his staff. It might turn out to be nothing serious, but if there is a problem then she needs to know as soon as possible after finding the lumps so a decision can be made. No person should have to wait for something that has the potential to be serious.

Thank you for your advice. My sister let me know that they biopsied the lumps and they were benign. They were probably caused by hormone replacement therapy. She quit taking the hormones.

Sometimes doctors can pretty much tell what the lump is just by feeling. Her doctor may not think the lumps are anything but cysts, and therefore he's not in any hurry to have it checked out. I would ask him staight out why he wasn't pushing things any faster. If she isn't satisfied with him reply, she could look for another doctor and get a 2nd opinion.

That is good to know. My sister hasn't let me know yet what is going on with her at this point. I think she was going to have a mammogram and they were going to decide after that whether she needs a biopsy. Thanks, sbeauty, for your advice. I appreciate it.

We always need to be aware! - We will find a cure one day to all cancer and when that day happens I will be a happy lady!
Have your sister stalk her doctor. Do not mess around! Cancer is serious. It might not be cancer it could be horomone related but it is better to have it checked out immediately. If this doctor does not respond go to another one. Make sure they know how scared she is!

I finally heard the results of her tests from my sister and she says that is benign. That is such good news. I think it probably was hormone related because she was taking hormone replacement. Thanks to all for your concern and input into this.

If my sister found a lump on heron her boob and the dr was slow getting a n appoiment for a mamagram I would push my sister to call every hour of evrey day until she got one. It's possible that she can call and get one herself.

My adcise is to have it checked and properly diagnosed by a doctor. there are certain lumps that are harmless. But since your sister had an appointment already but took too long, then find another doctor. I think such things should be checked by someone reliable and not someone who takes a month to even schedule here. Time is of the essence when it comes to this things.

Well, I would advice her to get a checkup done and if necessary go for a biopsy.A lump doesn't always mean the worst. It could be just a lymph nodule that has swelled. So, she could be at ease once the checkup is done.
