Do you shut down your computer when the weather turns bad?

Do you shut down your computer when the weather gets bad? Or do you wait till the last minute or the electricity goes out? I can remember many times when I would keep going on the pc and sometimes the electricity would go out. I was lucky enough to have a battery backup so I could save anything I was working on. During one storm though, the lighting came in and fried the modem, battery backup, and monitor. Now I shut down when the weather gets that bad. But I wonder if that would really stop it messsing up the computer if it came through the electrical lines anyhow.

I always shut down all my electronics when a storm comes through my area. To afraid of something getting fried. Plus electronics are rather expensive to replace. Like earlier today all I needed to hear was that a nasty storm was coming this way and I ran through the house unplugging everything. Boy I am glad that I did to, when got hit pretty hard here. Lightning, hail, major down pour and straight line winds. Was rather scary.

Sounds like your getting the same front of storms going through that we (southern TN) are right now. Been under a tornado watch and severe storm warnings since about 3 p.m. this afternoon.

I think it was the same storm front that came through Kentucky. At least I know it was headed down that way. Sorry next time I will try to keep the storms up here..lol

We needed the rain. This is a farming community and we were way behind on rainfall for the year so far.

If it is just rain and thunder no. If it is an electrical storm, absolutely. We have lost modems, USB hubs, routers, and surge suppressors because we didn't unplug things in time. One time we even had a phone jack destroyed and were without DSL and phone for 2 weeks until we could get the phone company in to replace the jack. Now if the weather starts getting really bad, we tend not to take too many chances with it.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that not only do we shut down, we also unplug everything. We have the powerstrips in easy reach so they are handy to get to.

That sounds like what happened to us a few years back. The surge protectors were even fried.

If it is a lightning storm I do, especially since Colorado is the 2nd highest state for lightning strikes, Florida being the first. Any other kind of weather I really don't worry about.

I never shut mine down to storms. Yes I've lost power a couple of times but that was it. I do have a surge protector on my line though so that is to help against that. I have seen things get fried even when they are off so I figure why bother. Besides I need something to distract me during storms so I'm on the computer or waching TV during that time.

I never shut mine down, I have surge protectors on all of my computers and so far so good I have not had any problems with my computers going out. If it is a serious electrical storm then yes i would shut them down and even unplug them otherwise I haven't and can say I am lucky to have not had any bad problems...The internet has gone out but my computers were running fine.

I had surge protectors on mine a few years ago when they got fried. But I still don't unplug during a storm, I just shut down now.

I shut down my computer when there are heavy lights and rain, which I thought it's the time to shut down the computer, or if there is water from rain in my wall.. because my computer room isn't built well.. "
