Calling all Filipinos...

Filipinos - Filipinos around the world.
Philippines
April 3, 2007 10:40pm CST
It's high time to heed to this call by a concerned citizen. To those who are hesitant or afraid to dip their fingers in the fermented political waters around us, I urge them to please get involved NOW before we all get drowned. Evil and scheming people thrive and their number grows because good people remain quiet and hide. Evil and scheming people in this country will continue to be on a roll as long as the good continue to be timid and uninvolved. The former have their 3Gs -guns,goons and gold. Let's counter them with our own 3Gs- God, goodness and guts. Share your thoughts on this.

There will be no more irresponsible and corrupt people in this country if the government would prioritize education. If all of us will be educated, there will be no more snatchers, thiefs, corrupt officials and other evil people around us. To know right/wrong, we should all be educated.

one best approach to counter corruption is thru education, as you mentioned. i agree with you. people should be taught the positive and negative effects of corruption, after which propose feasible programs to monitor the status of corruption in the Philippines. an example of this monitoring is the LIFESTYLE CHECK of all public servants.

on the contrary, having good education is not a guarantee that you won't be corrupt. in fact, there are intellectuals around BUT VER MUCH CORRUPT. they learned the SECRETS on how to become corrupt. so in getting a good education, one must properly use it for the good of the country.

While I believe that education is important, it is never a guarantee againts corruption. The "good education" had alresdy failed us because we live the Bible-based morality out of the question. Look at how morally-bankrupt the UP shool system. A Catholic schools? A very failed institutions likewise. Catholic Church? hey, it never helps that almost all of our politicians are Catholics. I am not blaming but just stating a reality. I don't have any relegion-based group for now.

Vigilance for me is the key, to be more active and keep an eye on those things that we see are somewhat not for the sake of the many. I don't think protesting is the right thing to do, as I don't see any point in doing that so. If we could only unite as one, then I think we can topple all the indifference that we think our government is doing. Always try to go for the best solutions, and not for those leftist's way. As we cannot correct the mistake, by another mistake!

Reporting abuses for me is the best option but the problem is where to report? It seems that everything connects and no one in power is willing to do their job. I the rulers broke the rule who is more powerful that them? I hope this coming election people will think wisely and very carefully of whose to give the crown.

i believe that there are still those working in the government and the private sectors who dared to be different, meaning who are still honest, diligent, and willing to help "clean-up" the system. don't you think so? there are still good apples remaining in a basket of rotten apples. so pick up the good apples and segregate them now.

as i said to others, if ever we want to redress our grievances against any evil practices in our country and when we want to suggest ideas how to counter these problems, we should always do the legal and peaceful way. Reporting abuses of government officials or any public sevants for that matter are encouraged. Government as well as non-governemntal agencies are willing to help us. We are not losing hope.

You said it right, that is the harsh reality of our political society. What makes me wonder is why people is still and keep voting for those corrupt and inconsiderate moron! We are just going in circles. All our prvious concerned Filipino who sacrifice there lives like Ninoy Aquino just turned into dust. I think one way that we all can be hero in a small way is to think carefully and wisely who is going to vote this coming election. Don't get along with all the charades of those showbiz and athelter politicians as well as those old politicians that doesn't do anything good for this country.

that's why there's the need to EDUCATE ourselves, the voters, and CHANGE our perspective that our votes cannot be bought by money or exchanged for personal favors. i read an article that says that there are at least 4 types of voters, namely, the "thinking" voters, the "fan" voters, the "paying" voters and the "fying" voters.

I'm glad that you made a stand in this. All we need is unity(i don't refer on the faction/party), and don't let this negative 3G that infest out nation which is the reason to poverty. I don't believe that some people say that corruption is not the bottomline why do we suffer right now. I have in mind that the remaining members of the family who started this must be out of the picture immediately, they are the epitome/epitomy of corruption in our country.

i really don't understand why filipinos can never be one. our advocacy here is to get rid of corruption as much as possible through legal and peaceful means. EDUCATION is the most basic step we should do. educate the people as to the importance of their votes which would make big difference in their lives and the lives of their children. We then can proudly say that we are smart enough not be swayed by the manipulative schemes of the different candidates.

Yes, I agree that we all must really get involved AND NOT JUST DURING THE ELECTION BUT MORE SO everyday of our lives as Filipinos. There is an additional 4th G -- girls hehehehe. I am local voter here in my place. The vote price here is TAGGED AT NOT LESS THAN P1000 and could go as high as P2000 for some individuals. The problem is we have nowhere to go since both candidates running for mayor are having the same strategy -- there is no alternative candidate and even if there is an alternative he/she got zero chance of even getting 5% of the votes. People are already accepting this way of election and here everybody knows of this system. I think the dirtiest politics is in the local level. I have not heard of any Senatoriable here buying votes, usually candidates for Mayor.

it's really on the local levels that most anomalies are happening during campaign and election day itself. it's sad to note about this observation. even in our locale i learned that 6 cans of sardines, 2 kilos of rice and 6 packs of noodles is the price for a single vote. that's why we should start the change within us, especially the voting populace. let us not allow the enemy to destroy our principles.

A very encouraging post. I just hope all those people who remained uninvolved will happen to read this post, ryan. Like you, I have always hoped that somehow, our fellows would learn to speak for their rights, especially their right to cast a "vote" only to those people who would really deserve to be at the position and who would take full responsibility of the office he is holding.

Sounds okay for me but seems that it will take some time to really wiped this government of these kinds of people. Even the hostage taker made his move to cry out his disgust with the present government. Now he is in Jail being charged of various misdemeanors. They are even accusing him of child abuse for that hostage taking incident. He is a hero to his victims but to the government they take him as a criminal rather than hearing his concerns. Starting now is a good battle cry but what, when and how to start is the big question on this matter. Protest Rallies? boycotts and many other forms and I believe has become very common and sometimes gets unnoticed already. How do we really do this?

i believe that fighting against evil practices may require tediuous time and eforts but towards the end, good will prevail. undeniably, there's no magic solution or formula to counter the problem of corruption. but we know that choosing the right leaders through election is one proven way. in order for the people to choose the right candidate we need first to know at least TWO things about the candidates : MORAL INTEGRITY AND ABILITY TO RUN THE OFFICE. Moral integrity can be seen through the friends and associates of the candidates. It is important that the candidate is not connected directly or indrectly with any form of corruption or to anyone stained with corrupt practices. another way is educating the people and making them realize how important are their votes that can make a big difference in their lives and lives of their children. votes cannot be bought by money or exchanged for personal favors. LOYALTY TO A PERSON OR TO A POLITICAL PARTY MUST END WHERE LOYALTY TO THE COMMUNITY AND OR TO THE NATION BEGINS. Therefore, we will endeavor to study each candidate as exposed in the news media and include our findings in different resources such as newspapers, in internet through e-mails, forum discussions like this one in mylot. this will make the candidates also aware, that we, the people, are watching them. any corrupt practices or abuse of authority that we see around should be reported at once to media and concerned government agencies for proper actions. if only mr. ducat sought the help of his friend senator bong revilla, in redressing his grievance, it would have turned out to be a noble act.

It's nice to see that once in a while someone out there calls out and shows that they really do care for their country. I admire your gallantry and patriotism, but may I ask, where do we start? With the government? The election process? Or with ourselves? And how do we get involved? Do we join protests, rallies, and the like?

I know there is still hope for the Philippines, I cannot go out in streets and join protest for all those corrupt officials but I'm doing my own involvement..If we all Filipinos will just get down on our knees and pray and turn away from our wicked ways, The Lord will hera from heaven and will HEAL OUR LAND.
• Philippines

you are totally right. prayers can help a lot. but i should say, it's a more passive way of contributing (i don't mean to be rude when i say passive...i do believe in prayers). i want to divulge more on the legal respect of fighting corruption, not neccessarily on the morality and ethics aspects of the issue, but in the light of political awareness, public participation and sense of public ownership. PEACE be with you.

I know that the situation of Filipinos now are very hard and desperate. Politicians even makes it harder because of their corruption and selfishness. But still, I really think there's still hope. There's always hope forever! As long we continue to do what's right, I know everything will be fine. We don't have to be REALLY bothered by the craziness that is going on right now in our country. There'll be a day where those bad people will face some unpleasant consequences and I'm sure they will regret it. I guess we just have to be good in our own simple ways and continue to do nice things to everybody and who knows, maybe we can inspire other Filipinos to do the same as well. You'll be considered a hero for that! - Ron Reyes www.ronreyes.co.nr
