What are the most important things to have in your carry-on luggage?

Jusssst in case my checked-in luggage goes to Russia again when my destination is Toronto, Canada...
I always have a change of casual clothes, some toiletries and a comfortable pair of shoes along with gifts, jewelry and books and magazine I need.
What do you take along?

I try to minimize the wight of my luggaes,but evry time I have with me more things that I need.
the very basic and important things for me are: make up things that I don't put in my hand bag,underclothes,hair plate,another pair of shoes,another change of clothes.these are the things of my weekends,so only for 2-3 days.But if the travell is longer,the list of the things is very very long.
I take always take with me books, and other things,but I put them in hand bag.
