How did you select your paint colors?

Do you follow what someone else tells you (ie books or magazines) or have you picked colors based on what you love?
I'm in the midst of picking some new colors upstairs and I haven't had enough sunlight to select just the right shade (heck, I gotta live with it!). I'm doing a shade of cobalt blue (my favorite color) in my bedroom, but I'm at a loss for the other two still. I'm also doing a yellow (not bright, not dark) in my kitchen, to compliment my cabinets (a beautiful reddish brown)--although it's not my favorite, both of those rooms get a LOT of sunlight daily and I felt that more intense colors would really jump at you. I have neutrals (white, off white) in my living room, family room and dining room (although I have a blue oriental-style rug in the dining room). What moved you to select the colors (or did you hire a decorator)?

Hi, Your decorating sounds really nice. I've recently done my living room it now has two red walls and two cream walls and looks really nice. My daughter chose the colours as she's doing an interior design course at college and I must say the colours work really well.

It sounds warm and sophisticated...very classy! I'm still struggling to do upstairs--I'm so dang short and no one wants to help me do the ceiling! I'd use a ladder, but it's in the garage right now and I'm afraid to carry it up to the 2nd floor!

I'd do that, but my neck has arthritis and I can't tilt my head back more than a few minutes. I've got someone to come in and paint now, which is good. It'll be broken up, but I can handle doing the walls, it's the ceiling (and the stairwell, which will be quite hard, since it gets quick high). Thanks though!

Have you tried a roller on an extended pole? Or even those paint pads which are blimmin brill, thats how I do my ceilings as it's so annoying moving the ladders every few minutes!

Well, I usually go with what I like and try not repeat my self from room to room. Like you said, you have to live with it so choose carefully. I think the last time we painted a room we fought about the color longer than it took us to paint. Take care!!

That's why I'm 'proceeding with caution'. I finally sat down and figured out my favorite color...cobalt blue. Now I'm integrating that color into every room, to make me happy. That's the one thing I learned from watching BH&G TV last fall--start with your favorite color or a painting and go from there.

I am not that good with decor .. I am not really interested enough to plan it all properly .. so I have mainly neutrals all round with just a few splashes of colour as the mood takes me ..
Furniture and curtains are generally bought by price rather than what I really want as I haven't enough money to go mad .. I'm always on a very strict budget ..

Have you considered buying wood furniture (finished or not) and maybe repainting a piece or two in your favorite color as a focal point? I'm considering doing that in my bedroom--finally got it down to a color scheme, now I've got to clean it out to paint!
